A lot of factors had me leaning towards this title. Other titles considered were: "Witchboard" (my next purchase), "The Beast Within", and "Slumber Party Massacre" (still holding onto the trilogy set.)
I thought Crawlspace was decent, but I preferred both The Beast Within and Witchboard to it.

Oh theres definitely a market, I'm constantly seeing listings of just cover slips going for $6 or so (no idea how well they sell, but people are trying).

If you are a slasher fan, and want to see Scream go after more slashers, please pick up their current titles on BD. They stated on Facebook that a lot of titles they would compare lesser slashers to (X-Ray/Schizoid, Death Valley, Horror Show) sold poorly or only ok. They said they will monitor future sales of Slumber Party Massacre, Final Exam, and The Final Terror, as to determine what amount of focus, or if any focus, to put on acquiring future slasher titles.

So if you're a fan, and want to see more/any slasher titles in the future from Scream ( honestly I'd be happy with 3 or 4 per year ), please vote with your wallet and let Scream know we will support future slasher releases.

Sales levels of any particular subgenre depend on many factors: whether or not it's a film a lot of people want, whether or not it's an upgrade from DVD, if it's a first-time release, etc. Bad Dreams and Visiting Hours were both previously released, as was Terror Train. I was on the fence about BD/VH mainly because I prefer standalone releases vs. double features (same deal with X-Ray/Schizoid although I purchased it and love both films). Also, both BD and VS aren't exactly the among the better horror flicks IMO as BD was a take on the Elm Street films and VS felt more like a TV movie. The Final Terror could potentially become a best seller for Shout since it's never been released properly on home video but, again, it's a film that likely isn't on many people's top 10 favorites. It will sell a decent amount I think based on obscurity alone. Slasher fans are out there, old and young alike. Otherwise, they wouldn't have made hundreds of them between 1978 and 1984. They couldn't make them fast enough back then (and many still haven't made it to home video).

Scream Factory on Facebook on future of slasher releases
Quote:
We'd love to get more but some of the more requested ones (like Hell Night, for instance) are tied up in legal rights hell or they're with other studios we can't license from.

The more obscure ones are harder to go after when sales for some of our other ones that we would comp them to (X-ray/Schiozid, The Horror Show, Crawlpsace, Death Valley, etc) sold either poorly or only OK.

We'll be looking at our upcoming Final Exam and The Final Terror sales performance closely and we're still gauging sales of Slumber Party Massacre and Bad Dreams/Visiting Hours to determine our focus on slashers going forward.
I've bought every slasher, and will continue to buy them, just so we might see some more on BD.

The slasher is my favorite subgenre of horror and I'll buy anything from pre-90's but basing future focus off movies like Horror Show and Death Valley?

Those might be two of the least interesting titles they've released so far IMO. SBM, Final Exam, Final Terror... now that's what they should gauge off.

Looking at Scream Factory's actual statement, it seems their response was aimed more at slasher semi-obscurities than slashers in general. If a highly requested title like Hell Night avails itself to them, they're not going to pass on it because Death Valley or The Horror Show sold poorly. It might impact their decision to go after a more obscure title like Slaughterhouse.

Indeed. This reminds me of when Shout! said they would guage interest in future Ninja and martial arts films by the sales of Ninja 3. Not the best litmus test.

I completely agree, but I'm sure anyone who has followed this thread or my post history would already know that.

While I hope Scream Factory releases remain versatile, I am not particularly upset by their response. My favorite releases from them have been their non-slasher releases (with the exception of Halloween 2 & 3). I would in fact be thrilled if they put out more releases similar to the Vincent Price Collection, Vampire Lovers, and Die Monster Die.

Of course I would love for Scream to release all sorts of horror movie, especially since I know many of you on here particularly enjoy the slashers.

I enjoy the diversification of Scream Factory too. Although, my favorite sub- genre is the Slasher, I enjoy all types of horror. The diversity keeps things fresh.

I do hope the sales of the slashers pick up though, because I'd least like to see between 2-4 slasher releases a year from Scream, simply b/c there are so many that haven't had a good release since the VHS days.

yeah....that made me scratch my head at that statement. I like Scream and all, but I hear statements like this and I wonder wtf is up over there.... How about judging Sleepaway Camp, Final Exam, etc.... putting something like The Horror Show on that list is pretty suspect. You're gonna have a miss for every few hits you have. Hell, the Halloween sequels they did good at....

I'll pick up Slumber Party Massacre and Final Exam on pre-order soon enough.... show support for titles that interest me.

DEATH VALLEY was very often requested for years, no point doing a revisionist history here. Many slasher fans wanted someone, anyone, to get this away from MCAs hands, and they did, and if it didnt perform well, you can't blame them for being cautious.

I'll try and spread the word for all slasher fans to support your releases as well! I can't wait for your next release, The House on Sorority Row. I hope it does very well for you! I've had it pre-ordered since the first day it went up on Amazon.

True, but they should be basing stuff off more popular and top tier slashers. Death Valley (while a good movie) is hardly what I'd called a traditional slasher. Wait and see how well Sleepaway Camp, Slumber Party Massacre and Final Exam sell. Those titles are better to base things on.

There's a massive slasher fan base, its just that Scream need to start focusing more on the genre and start releasing some of the top tier stuff. The slasher genre is really lacking on Blu ray and I think Scream are the perfect company to change that. I guess rights issues impact on what they can release though. I bet if they released Silent Night Deadly Night, sales would go through the roof.

How well did Terror Train sell?

I wouldn't say The Horror Show was a slasher in the strictest sense either.
