Well , it is supposed to be the best available but there are always exceptions..and I see blu ray users get defensive about gripes with that format as well... so it works both ways.

Either format is fine for me as long as the film is available Ill take it (except maybe in the case of a truly bad print of something Alpha video esque)
I don't see DVDs going away at all..

As for the arguing, can't we all just forget it? we're all horror fans and if someone wants to ask for "Friday the 13th part 2" uncut from scream they are not harming anyone. This thread is for anyone interested in horror not just those who , myself included, may have more knowledge than average. Peace everyone

You know you're post just reminded me of someething i've always thought, back in the day so many movies that are considered horror classics we're slagged off by fango, gorezone, shivers etc by both reviewers and people writing in yet now the same lot love them. Nostalgia i suppose.

Haven't read Fangoria in about 8 years but will grab this special issue. I wonder if they still have "Berserker" on their Video Chopping List. It's been on it since about 1998 lol

Why would anyone choose DVD over Blu if both are availible. Maybe I'm missing something.

not always, but yes I also deal in reality and that's why my new poll is very realistic with only titles Scream can actually get, also I think the reason so many of us want so many titles released is because we loved them and hope they can get this treatment done to them, and also if scream does about 40-50 titles a year, and we go off what is expected of them to release (from studios who Scream can licenses from), for example my poll has 189 titles, that means scream would end in about 3-5 years, and I think many of us, still wants them to keep going , but I know Scream won't end anytime soon.

I think scream must keep knocking on LG, WB etc door as they must realise themselves what you have just posted. You never know, bigger shocks have happened.

The important thing is not the format but also the quality of the encoding and any digital work done on the film. There are many examples where the blu-ray release is inferior or equilivalent to the DVD (Deadly Spawn, Predator, Hills Have Eyes, etc). Simply because something is on a blu-ray disc does not guarantee superior image or quality; just that the format is capable of such if the author choses. Scream Factory gets a lot of criticism for releases that are superior to DVD but miss the mark in optimal picture quality due to sloppy/poor encoding leading to blemishes.

I think the biggest issue is that so many films will not become available on blu-ray due to poor picture elements, legal limbo, or perceived lack of demand so horror fans have to "tolerate" standard definition and enjoy the content over picture quality.

An adequately mastered Blu-Ray will almost always trump even the best DVDs, but a well mastered DVD can sometimes best a poorly mastered Blu-Ray. I'd suggest reading up on The Deadly Spawn Blu-Ray for an example. The Synapse DVD will likely provide better results even with it's inherent SD limitations.

More often, it has something to do with film alterations. Color timing changes, inferior cuts, altered soundtrack, altered aspect ratios, etc. The Tourist Trap Blu-Ray contains an 85 minute cut of the film that omits certain scenes and changes the placement of others, but does not include the original 90 minute theatrical cut that was on the DVD. Jason Goes to Hell was released in the Friday the 13th boxset, but omitted the preferable director's cut with the extra gore that was included on the DVD. Halloween dropped the original mono soundtrack and the debate over it's color timing is endless.

In many cases, the the Blu-Ray has omitted some, or even all, of the extras that were included on the DVD. This doesn't necessarily affect those that just want the film in it's best presentation, but it does present a bit of a quandary for those that place high value on extras.

I think most of the time, Blu releases are good quality. Of you course, you have exceptions from cheap/lazy studios who put out subpar releases. The same was true with some DVDs having VHS-quality picture (Fright Night Part II for example). Hills Have Eyes is a perfect example. I was going to buy it until I read the reviews about the picture being a DVD-upscale.

Like I said, Blu is better than DVD by default, just by the nature of being high resolution. If you have a small tv, then you won't notice the difference. But there is a difference. I don't think it's a matter of opinion, it is a fact.

I agree that there are so many movies not on Blu, that should be. I've listed a few of my favorites in prior posts.

Sorry for the brief derailment.

If there's a title I want and it's not available on blu-ray, or doesn't look like it'll ever be available on blu-ray, I have no issues getting the DVD as long as it's of good quality and is not a non-anamorphic transfer. I finally found a copy of the OOP DVD of He Knows You're Alone the other day, and since it's with Warner, I doubt it'll be heading to blu-ray any time soon. If it does get a re-release on DVD, I imagine that it may be released through the Warner Archive Collection on a DVD-R, like Nightbreed and Fire in the Sky were rereleased under.

I would also imagine that the DVD of something like Leatherface: TCM 3 would be the best release. With Warner's new "no unrated cut" policy, if Leatherface were to get a blu-ray release, it will probably be the R-rated theatrical cut, and then the DVD would be the better version.

I thought Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers had a nice transfer. Only 1080i, I think, but it was the best it's looked since I saw it in the theater.

I hope the Producer's Cut gets released on Blu. There is a 35mm print in existance. I prefer the Theatrical Cut, but would like to see an HD version of the P-cut.
