I find comparisons to be immensely helpful, and they very appropriate for each thread as they are highly relevant.

I have no problem with their release either and neither do most people who buy films. I think some have just ruined their minds finding out about DNR, EE and other stuff that they can't just enjoy the film itself anymore.

To me they all look fine and better than when I seen them on TV or the DVD's I have seen.

I don't think anyone should get all butthurt over someone coming in here telling it like it is. Until Scream admits the problem, we will get this argument. It is a forum, everyone has an opinion. I appreciate when someone speaks up and mentions this, or says Arrow has a better version. I would rather want the best version, whether it is from Scream or not.

To immediately call people haters for pointing out actual flaws mentioned in reviews multiple times, I think is aimlessly defending a company.

Let me tell you right now, I do buy Arrow versions all the time if there are, and I'm sure others do too. Doesn't mean we hate Scream. I love my The Fog and They Live releases, as well as Town That Dreaded Sundown

I think that the comparisons between Scream and Arrow in this thread are warranted, and I'm glad that people are holding Scream Factory's feet to the fire when it comes to realizing their full potential with transfer quality.

That said, I'm Region A by choice, I own the Scream Factory Blu-ray of Motel Hell, and I love the release. I was enjoying the movie without dwelling on the picture quality when I took the Blu-ray for a couple of spins a few weeks ago.

Maybe my standards are too low, but a lot of these long-lost 1980s B-movie horror flicks released by Scream Factory simply look like, well, long-lost 1980s B-movie horror flicks. I'm cool with that.

forgive me for the word haters... perhaps that's too strong. But the fact remains that these points have been made over and over and over again. They serve very little at this point of the game.

btw I own many Scream/Shout titles and I posted several times at the atrocious quality of NOSFERATU so I don't defend the company every time.

Yup, I feel the same way. I have no problem with a slightly subpar transfer as long as there's not a better version out there. I'm one of the few people out there that doesn't mind their release of Darkman, I loved the special features on it and I grew up watching it in pan & scan on TBS and USA so it looked good to me! :P If there IS a better version, though, that's what I'm going to want to know about. I love what Scream does with extras and a better transfer alone isn't going to make me buy a different version over theirs. I have a bunch of their releases (The Fog, Prince of Darkness, Halloween II, The Howling, Ginger Snaps, Phantom of the Paradise, Darkman, Assault on Precinct 13, They Live, From Beyond, Vincent Price Collection, From Beyond, Cat People, Day of the Dead) as well as a ton of Shout Factory stuff (Incredible Melting Man, Q, Knightriders, about 15 volumes of the MST3K show, the MST3K movie, 10 or so single disc MST3K releases, Piranha, The Producers, The Vampire Lovers, some of those cheap 4 pack DVDs). There's nothing in there I regret buying and wish I'd bought some other version of. Lifeforce, on the other hand, I am glad I was informed about the existence of a version with a much longer documentary, cause with that kind of movie the behind the scenes stuff is just as interesting to me as the movie itself. I don't see a point in having a discussion forum if it's censored to only include one point of view, especially when a lot of us are bigger fans of the movies we buy than the company we buy it from.

The reason they keep being brought up is because they haven't been fixed (although supposedly Pumpkinhead doesn't suffer from these issues, so perhaps they've worked on fixing it, although I'll wait to see if it continues before I claim that they've turned it around).

They serve a lot of point, because it isn't a given that every Scream blu is flawed and every Arrow blu is perfect. It's not the case that people say EVERY Arrow disc is better in EVERY way at EVERY time. It's actually on a case by case basis. For example, as far as I know, the Arrow blu of Funhouse is about equal to Scream's (except in terms of extras). And because it's not always 100% the case, they DO still serve a purpose at this point of the game, in letting us know specifically which instances buying a blu other than Scream's is the preferable option.

And if you're just sick of hearing about the seemingly endless poor encodes pouring out of the Scream Factory, I think your complaints would be much better served, for all our sakes, directed towards Scream Factory. As opposed to continually shooting at the messengers, we'd all benefit if Scream started making problem-free discs, right? I mean, even if you think the flaws aren't a big deal, you still wouldn't be actively against them putting out even better quality releases, would you?

Some people are definitely too sensitive about DNR. DNR can be used well and effectively and has been in many praised transfers. That said, DNR can also be overused and scrub out detail, which it did in Motel Hell by the look of the caps. It's a balancing act, and when it goes over to the "dark side" will probably depend on the viewer.

Besides Aliens, what films have had effectively used DNR, or praised transfers with DNR?

The Bond movies off the top of my head. There are many others. Most restoration teams use DNR in some capacity. Don't be brainwashed by the "all DNR is evil" chanters.

All of the James Bond Blu-rays are superb except for Goldeneye.

Goldeneye still looks better than the DVD, but its shortcomings are hugely apparent when watching the Bond movies in sequence. Especially because the Blu-ray of Licence to Kill is so spectacular.

I don't have a problem with either company. I buy both Scream and Arrow releases now. I was glad to have Scream and now equally glad to have found Arrow. I don't judge them, I just want the movies I grew up loving. My Arrow purchases are movies Scream doesn't offer. Right now in my possession I have the Steelbook of Demons and Demons II. I have four others on their way and am looking forward to them. I have heard some good things about extras from Arrow and know Scream usually has some cool extras. So to me they are about even. No matter what you do or say there will always be the trash talking about one or the other. So just buy what you love from who you want and don't pay attention to what others say. It is that simple, so let them rant...

I prefer the Scream Factory release of The Funhouse to Arrow's. I had the original Arrow release of The Funhouse, but it only had a lossy DTS 2.0 audio track. Scream Factory's release included lossless DTS HDMA 5.1 and 2.0 tracks, so to me it was worth it to replace Arrow's release with Scream Factory's.
