The double features are priced so low already ($24.97 SRP), you could always just buy them and simply... not watch the other movie?

TerrorVision / The Video Dead is even down to $19.93 SRP, and both movies are loaded with extras. You're really missing out, that's a great bargain, and if they did release it individually I can't imagine it'd be any cheaper.

Plus, The Rage: Carrie 2 even has its own disc... so there you go. Use the TV remake as a drink coaster or a frisbee or something. Or better yet, sell it as a "disc only" on eBay and get some of your money back?

They were put in double features because SF figures individuals won't sell enough. From the podcast they recently did, I'm expecting more double features in the future. Double features are better than no release at all.

After years of bizarre complaints about double features, I have concluded that some folks believe that their favorite movies will somehow become "infected" if forced to share a disc with a lesser film.

That's why you want to make sure that your BD of CITIZEN KANE doesn't sit on the shelf beside PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. You might put Kane in your BD player one day and discover that Orson Welles has been replaced by Tor Johnson.

Yes. Some collectors are very anal about the smallest things. Even when the Alien Anthology was $20 on sale I saw people who refused to buy it because "I'm not having Alien 3 in my collection!" Then there are the people who won't buy a movie in HD unless all the sequels are in HD too, so they can have a "complete collection."

Collectors are weird. I say this as a collector btw. I guess my anal thing is wanting each movie to have its own case, I dislike bundles, but I still buy them if it's the only way to own a movie.

Hey I liked The Video Dead. Last time I watched Terrorvision that song from the opening credits was stuck in my head for a week and a half, it's so obnoxious yet so catchy at the same time.

As far as the two double features that they are upgrading from the two All Night Horror Marathon DVD sets I only enjoyed The Vagrant and The Outing. The Godsend was a snooze fest and What's the Matter with Hellen was just ok. Cellar dweller and Catacombs are just mediocre. Rage War was a joke in my opinion and I shut contamination.7 off after, well, about .7 minutes

I've never seen Ghosthouse or Witchery but I do look forward to checking them out. As far as Metamorphosis and Beyond Darkness I've not seen those either but from what I've read about them I have decided to pass. I don't mind the double features because really in the end you get two for the price of one and its a shelf space saver.

Yes. They are both terrible, but 3 seemed like a much larger slap in the face. Me? I'm good with the first. Maybe the second too. I don't know. I don't have the hard-on for Aliens that most do.

Talking about Newt? I loved Newt. More specifically with Aliens, it is ridiculously long (yet the best scenes are the ones that are excluded from the still-long theatrical cut). It's fine. Not bad, just not nearly as good as the first.
Don't even get me started on the first AVP movie (AKA the worst movie in either franchise).

I think Scream should be more concerned with improving their transfers, if you ask me. If Scream is going to pass on a film in terms of a potential BD release merely because they can't add much in terms of extra features, well I'd rather see Kino pick the film up even if it is a bare bones release.

The problem I have with this statement is that Scream Factory already has a relatively small footprint, but thankfully it's large enough to see an occasional sale or used copies to show up at good prices online. Kino, Olive, Scorpion, Code Red, etc pretty much never see titles go on sale (that I'm aware of) and also rarely if ever see titles re-sold on the 2nd hand market at a less than retail price. As much as I love to support these small studios, there are just some films that I can't bring myself to pay $20+ on. If titles suddenly start going the way of these tiny studios, my ability to afford and own said titles goes down as well... especially if they become limited to 1000 copies and sell out before release.

For me, when deciding whether to buy a box set, it depends on the percentage of good versus evil. ALIENS if a good example of more good than evil. I like the first three films (yes, I think Cubed is underrated) and am not so keen on 4 (OK, hardly evil... but you get the point). That's 75% worth owning. Thumbs up then.

Agreed. I loved Newt, yeah annoying at times, but very likeable.

Yes, the theatrical cut, could've been shortened. It took almost an hour to see the first alien!! I wouldn't have minded, but most scenes before, were soooo drawn out. In the original, you were in awe of the Nostromo and planet, so you were drawn in just by the visuals. But in Aliens, we knew what we were getting, as far as the monsters. The build up just seemed to take forever. Then you have that very slow mid section, when they're trapped in the control center. It didn't help, that Cameron changed the look, of the aliens. In my opinion, they look awful, in most of their scenes. The animatronic mouths and the Queen look great. I still love the movie though. It IS very intense once it gets going.

I also enjoyed Alien 3. I hated Resurrection. Winona Ryder was out of place in the fourth movie. Her cutsie acting and her voice, just bugged me.

Ron Perlman was pretty much the saving grace of Resurrection.

That's a very good point. I have the Friday the 13th set as all the 8 I've seen so far have their own benefits from score, to high kill counts, and just being enjoyable.

However, I've never picked up the full Halloween or Nightmare sets, because despite absolutely loving the first 3 Halloweens and the 1st, 4th and New Nightmares, I can't justify buying a whole set when I don't like the rest.

You're going to have a rough time of it then because as discs quickly become more of a niche market the prices are only going to go up. The Twilight Time and Criterion business model is how everything will be before long, with prices probably even higher (especially if UBD catches on and becomes the niche format).

On a side note though, Kino titles do go on sale. I got Flesh + Blood not long ago for $12.99 and have seen others in that range.

In my opinion, there's the 1979 theatrical cut of Ridley Scott's Alien, and then there's the rest of them. That first movie is one of the finest films ever made, in my opinion.

Now, I think that James Cameron's Aliens is the second best of the franchise, and I also think that it's a great film, because it's infinitely quotable and it has a fun storyline.

The older I get, though, the more that Aliens sort of grates on my nerves.

My main problem is that, in Ridley Scott's 1979 film, we are presented with this horrific creature that kills off almost an entire ship crew, bleeds acid for blood, and seems basically invincible. The ominous presence of this one creature drives the tension throughout that first movie. In Aliens, however, there's an early scene where we watch a bunch of these creatures effortlessly blown to bits by pulse rifles. This early scene, while effective in its own right, is irritating in the way that it all but negates the terrifying immensity and mystique of the one creature in the first film.

Aliens is a good movie, but its story makes the first movie look weaker. That's the problem with each subsequent Alien sequel. Each one threatens to make the first movie weaker and weaker.

Couldn't of said this better myself. Alien for me is the far and away winner between the two. Aliens is just a good action film for me, while Alien is a masterpiece (and I don't like giving that title out to any movie since it's used way too many times).
