I ordered once through Amazon and got the item damaged. You can't send eco cases like that. Better of making a large order from them directly because then they will send your order in a box.

Edit: But I have stopped ordering from them completely after having problems with their other site (DeepDiscount). They basically lied and said an item was in stock when it wasn't and they would not refund me my money. Had to get PayPal involved.

Same here.

If people have had a bad experience, I fully understand their reluctance to use the same vendor again. We have the right to choose who we do business with and I don't argue the point with folks who have made a decision not to buy from a given company.

That being said. I've never had a problem with ImportCDs (other than long delivery times to Canada). Mulitple disc orders come in boxes and the single discs have always arrived just fine...even if the packaging seems less robust.

So I've done good...but I appreciate that unhappy customers would want to use somebody else.

Fair to point out that people have different definitions of "damaged" as well. I have seen people here claim an order was damaged because there was super minor edge bending on a slip-cover or whatever. I wouldn't even notice such a thing.

Only got one item damaged from Amazon, my complete set of The Wire, and it was packaged fine, so I blame UPS.

It's fair to say ImportCDs does have some of the worst packaging based on my experience. Shipping a Blu-ray in a plastic/Mylar bag doesn't provide much protection during shipping especially when the package is likely to get knocked around in transit. I've had some items arrive just fine and others damaged (broken cases/torn cover art due to damaged case).

I too have ordered from ImportCDs several times and have never had an issue. Either way, Amazon.ca will cover you if there are any issues.

When ordering multiple discs from them have you been hit with customs/duties? I was always worried about that and have always ordered 1 at a time.

I got dinged for PST/GST and whatever (duty, handling, I can't recall what it was) ONCE.

I've done something like 10 orders with ImportCDs...most of them direct with the company but once through amazon.ca.

With that one exception, they have always arrived at my door with nothing further owing.

Essentially, the Canada Border Services Agency has enough to do and the vast majority of small packages will slide through the system with no trouble. Technically, as good and conscientious citizens, we are responsible for sending the government a cheque to cover PST/GST and handling charges on all packages delivered...but seriously .

However, the CBSA will sometimes pick a package for a random spot check and decide to levy the fees. This happened with ONE box of about 5 BDs that I ordered from ImportCDs. Even then, the fees weren't outrageous. That was the one and only time I've ever had a foreign Blu-ray Disc package tagged for extra fees. I've ordered from Twilight Time, Amazon.uk, CDJapan, eBay sellers and a couple of third party sellers on amazon and they all arrived with nothing more owing.

So it CAN happen that your discs will arrive with a bill. But my personal experience is that it is a very low order of probability and you will probably be fine.

It's probably worth mentioning that the tax rates among the various Canadian provinces for imported goods vary dramatically. Alberta and the three territories (Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon) are only subject to the Goods and services tax (GST). British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan are subject to Provincial sales tax (PST) along with the GST. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario or Prince Edward Island are subject to Harmonized sales tax (HST) instead of GST+PST. These GST+PST and HST provinces pay double to triple the amount of taxes that their GST only brethren pay.

This has got to be the weirdest catch all thread on this site. We talk about Slip Covers, We Talk about Film Grain, We Talk about Compression, We talk about Dollar conversions, We talk import/tax fee's, we Talk about titles we would like to see on Blu Ray, we talk about occasional podcasts, we talk about rumors and speculation for upcoming titles... I can't remember the last time we talked about the films Scream Factory have actually put out in this thread. Not that I'm complaining per se, as I'd rather see a bustling thread with lively conversation than a dead one, but this has got to be the most random collection of conversations on this site. I never know what I'm going to stumble into.

I guess 10 titles announced last week wasnt enough.. they should announce 100 new titles.
Tell you what.. let's stir the pot a little bit...

We know that Shout Factory has The Deadly Mantis and Devilfish per the MST3K DVD releases, and obviously they have the AIP Arkoff titles that are with AMC Networks (War of the Colossal Beast, The Undead, The She Creature, etc)

I dont know about the rest of the collectors but I for one would love Scream or Shout, it does not matter which, would release these on blu ray minus the MST3K treatment. I love these film with or without the MST3K versions. Im actually concerned those at Shout might sit on these titles once they release them in MST3K Volumes and I would rather not have that happen. Those AIP titles do have HD masters as well. Id love an AIP blu ray set with Day the World Ended, the Undead, Earth vs the Spider, War of the Colossal Beast, The She Creature, Viking Women and the Sea Serpent and Teenage Caveman ! Shout may be our last hope to release them in HD !! And yes The Deadly Mantis and Devilfish too would be A+ in HD IMHO !
I know they read these threads.. and I hope they consider my idea.

Do they actually get the rights to non-mst3k'd versions and/or blu-ray rights with those? Some of the movies in those sets got blu-ray releases from other companies after the MST3K dvds were released (ex, the Gamera movies, the upcoming Manos, Gorgo) and many others have legit DVDs that are still in-print from other companies (ex, Revenge of the Creature, Deadly Mantis, The Black Scorpion, Alien from LA, etc). I figured that they only get the rights to release them as a MST3K version, unless they paid extra for the privilege or something.

This is a great point. I am guessing Warner for some reason was cool with Shout releasing the 3 Warner titles for MST3K only.

The AIP titles that Shout has were licensed because Lionsgate no longer has the rights to them, and Im under the impression Shout bought that same library. They have quickly released the AIP titles for MST3K volumes.. I feel certain that those could be for more than MST3K rights. Perhaps the Universal titles were for MST3K , and maybe even the MGM titles such as Village of the Giants. I can speculate that maybe they are for MST3K releases only - at least with Universal, but the MGM titles Id say 50% chance they could do MST and non MST versions.

It could be how Kino is has DVD rights to movies and Twilight Time has bluray rights to the same films

I was surprised it wasn't announced at Comic-Con, but I'm beginning to wonder if maybe this is another "Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II" situation where MGM released the DVD, but it's not technically an MGM film.

I would guess the same exact disc, they likely just had a contract keeping it box set exclusive for 6 months or whatever.

Shocker - Yay or Nay for a blind buy? In general I like Craven's movies (Serpent and the Rainbow, Nightmare, Deadly Blessing, Scream, I even enjoyed Red Eye!). Which would this be most similar to? Thanks!

It's most comparable to Nightmare on Elm Street, but probably more like one of the non-Craven sequels instead of the original (maybe somewhere in between 3 and 4 tonally??). It seems like it was trying to launch another franchise based around some kind of gimmicky serial killer, this one attacking through electronic devices instead of dreams. Problem is, the concept's not as good as Nightmare, and neither is the plot or most of the characters. The lead is definitely no Heather Langenkamp. It's not very good, but it's fun IMO, especially the climax. If you temper your expectations you'll probably like it enough to justify a blind buy.
