I usually flip my Scream Factory covers to the image of the original movie poster artwork, since the slipcovers have the original Scream Factory art anyway.

I'm making an exception with Night of the Demons, though, since I prefer the Scream Factory artwork to the original poster artwork.

Since the slipcovers feature the new artwork (which is often terrific; rarely am I disappointed by the new art), I flip the inserts around to show the original art. Granted, it can then be kinda weird when part of an image or some text shows through the cut-out used for the UPC, but oh well. Would be nice if the reverse side could take that into account and put an image in that spot, but it's not a big issue.

Really like the look of the clear cases as well.......having said that though, the slipcovers all lined up look just as great!

I've been mulling removing my slipcovers and just using the original art. The original art for THE FOG is so awesome I just couldn't bear to cover it with the slip. Not that the slip is unattractive (it isn't) but sometimes the original art is better. Same with Squirm. They look extra nice in black cases. I wish I knew how to post photos so I can show you guys.

The easiest decision that I've ever made in my entire life was the decision to flip the insert of Cat People (1982) around so that the original movie poster art would show.

I would want original poster art (one-sheet) every time given the choice...

I've always flipped the art to use the original poster art. It brings back the memories of the VHS days and seeing all that great artwork while looking through the horror section. They're also just better, except for maybe Dog Soldiers I can't think of one where I prefer the new scream artwork.

I agree, of course I want the original video and audio but I don't get the you choose anything other than the original poster art your evil argument, most of the old poster arts I didn't like. Look at EFNY the original art doesn't even look like Kurt Russel IMO, but glad that SF gives the option for either camp.

Ginger Snaps, Bordello of Blood, and Pumpkinhead all get my vote for the Scream version being better. (Had they gone with the original VHS Illustration on Pumpkinhead I'd be singing a different tune though.)

You and me both. That illustration rocked. I knew the moment I saw that at the video store; "This film is gonna be awesome!"

Pumpkinhead does have hideous poster art, I left the slipcover on that one.

I wouldn't say hideous... just radically different from anything we're used to. It took some time to grow on me, but I don't mind it anymore.

With that said, why they chose that over this beauty is a head scratcher. My only thought is that they didn't want the classic artwork outshining the newly commissioned artwork.

Edit: Those aren't my photos, and please ignore the ugly Promo hole punches in the cover... I just wanted to find some comparison images and these worked well besides the promo holes.

Not a head scratcher really, as Scream always tries to offer the original poster art on the flip-side, regardless if it was actually good poster art or not. Doesn't make any difference if better artwork was created for the VHS release; their modus operandi is to use the poster art. I liked that they stuck to their plan, instead of making editorial exceptions when the original poster art may not be the greatest.

PLUS, the original marketing for the film did not want to reveal what Pumpkinhead looked like, whereas the VHS cover gives it all away. The film itself reveals Pumpkinhead little by little, and I admire the original marketing for honoring that approach.

If what you're saying is true, then why didn't they use the actual original poster.

Technically, that isn't the original theatrical release poster art as it was never used for the theatrical release. That was DEG's poster art, but then DEG went into financial turmoil, and they never released the film and the film ended up in limbo. The film was finally picked up by United Artists for theatrical release instead, but even they didn't know how to handle it for the longest time, even changing the title to "Vengeance The Demon" (which was later used for some foreign territories), before they finally threw it out into theaters under its original title in a very limited release (even in major cities) before disappearing completely in under two weeks.

Yes, I agree, DEG's poster art was way better than UA's (MGM's), but DEG's wasn't the poster art used for the theatrical. But I think it may have come down to MGM not owning the DEG artwork; therefore Scream couldn't use it anyway, as MGM would only retain the rights to their own art. It would be a lot harder to track down the rights to the DEG poster artist and to a company that no longer exists in order to use DEG's poster, than just go with the original UA-MGM poster.

Yes, I prefer the Scream Factory cover art for Pumpkinhead as well. It reminds me of the Iron Maiden album covers that I love so much.

You people got me thinking about Pumpkinhead again. I might have to revisit that Blu-ray during October. So, so awesome.

Yeah I watched it this last weekend as one of my official Horror Marathon Entries so it's fresh on my mind. I'll watch Pumpkinhead II in the coming weeks most likely as well.
