They did not sell.

not all of their titles make money. if i remember correctly, if a title like this that has a ton of name recognition and is popular is successful and maybe even overperforms, they can take more risks on some of the lesser known titles. (i believe they even used scarecrows as a example. something that was widely requested but did not move a lot of copies.)

i think they also may have said that they also do not have digital rights, just domestic home video rights.
Do they say what kind of numbers a poor seller put out? How many titles were moved of a title like Scarecrows?

It's interesting to me what kind of numbers are poor for a company like Shout/Scream.

They never state numbers.

They never reveal actual sales numbers, publicly. Even if they did, it wouldn't really tell us anything because they also don't reveal their budgets or sales projections.

One thing to keep in mind is that, when they say a title sold poorly, there is no one magic number across the board that determines whether a title sold well or sold poorly. Not all titles will have the same sales projections and not all titles are budgeted equally.

Example: Two titles sell 5,000 copies each. Title A was projected and budgeted to sell 10,000 copies, while Title B was projected and budgeted to sell 3,000 copies. Sales for Title A would be considered poor, while sales for Title B would be considered good, even though both sold the same number of units.

I would bet some of that schock literally sold like 500 copies or even less. Insiders from other labels like Kino and Arrow have been more forthright about their sales and it's not uncommon for a really low interest movie like Scarecrows selling a few hundred copies and costing the label money in the end. That's why Shout are trying out the higher priced limited editions model for these super niche movies.

People moan a lot about double features, but then don't buy the individual release. Scream does a lot of fan service, but splitting hairs on what should and should not be included in a double feature should not depend on outcry from internet fanboys.

So Dead Ringers and Rabid scheduled for November. We should see the artwork for these in the next week or so.

Fingers crossed Black Christmas does indeed make it out before the end of the year, but it sounds like it could be tight.

This bit is intriguing:

I can’t announce anything unless the deals are signed and done. There are other titles that we currently have cooking that would’ve been just as splashy that we couldn’t announce for Comic-Con, but we tried.

I'd wager just as many people choose not to purchase the double features as they do the individual releases. Often times the people that complain the loudest about not wanting to pay for single editions.. (See Jeepers Creepers, Poltergeist, etc) are the same people that want everything for $10 regardless. If my options are Double Feature or nothing at all, the choice is pretty simple, however if given the choice I'll take single editions every single day of the week. Considering that for most of these films they may very well be the last time they ever see a physical release, I'd prefer that they be dressed up and given as nice of a presentation as possible. Packaging 2 films on one disc already bring that down one notch. If however Shout Factory were to get into the habit of issuing double features on 2 separate BD-25's complete with their own menu's, I could go about creating my own cover art and would no longer have a problem with double features.

One thing I always forget about Comic Con announcements is most of the slate won't hit the proverbial store shelves until well into the following year. Sure, a handful will trickle out before then but the majority won't be ready for months.

This is why it's a waste of time asking them if they have a certain title. They will deny, deny, deny, until they're ready to make an announcement.

I wasn't planning on buying Raising Cain, but I'm awfully curious about that new cut. Too bad they didn't reveal that before the big order I placed during the Shout sale. Wouldn't have minded the poster coming with the disc at that price.

Reading the Scarecrows post the day they announced it as a double feature was joyously horrifying.

And after they listened to the complainers and made it a single release, it still didn't sell.

The double features are very hit or miss. Honestly, I'm not that upset that they may make them limited because the temptation to buy them is much greater at a lower price point. I think the five worst films I've seen in the last year were in SF double features haha. There are some gems like "Vampire's Kiss", "Blacula", and "Terror Vision". I even enjoyed the "X-Ray"/"Schizoid" double feature. But then you have true shit like "Millenium", "Eliminators", "Witchery", "Catacombs", etc. Those things were real tempting at 14 or 15 bucks. At 25 or 30 bucks, not so much. If there's one I really want, I'll pick it up at the higher price, but it'll definitely dissuade me from picking up some real shit.

This is what lead me to believe that William Friedkin's Cruising could be a future possibility, as it was specifically mentioned by Jeff on that podcast.

I hope I don't have to buy Black Christmas after December and end up getting it later. It was so anticlimactic buying New Year's Evil in March or whenever it was it came out.

A good portion of the titles they've released under the Scream Factory banner are hit or miss. You're bound to find some titles that are on the crappy side, even with the ones that get the CE treatment.
