Scream Factory being a bunch of defensive, thin-skinned babies is nothing new, but I really couldn't care less when it comes to this release if they manage to knock it out of the park with the new transfer.

I'm a movie fan.

The amount of time I spend looking at the artwork is equal to the amount of time it takes me to open the case (after I've chucked the slip cover in the trash).

Put 'em all in plain brown wrappers. I'd be fine with that. Wading through the art/slip discussions here is like channel surfing and getting stuck watching the stage mothers arguing on Toddlers and Tiaras. It cringe-worthy to watch people embarrassing themselves but we eventually get past it.

and, I find it funny that Scream (hiding behind the anonymity of a corporate facebook account) is admonishing people for criticizing art. They say it's subjective and what one person loves, another won't...so, your criticism isn't valid.

Even though that's objectively wrong on many levels, it also comes off as hypocritical to an extent considering Cliff MacMillan once said this about Psycho IV years before eventually releasing it...

Quote:
We aren't releasing Psycho IV.
Sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't acquire it nor do I ever plan to. There are much better films to go after.
If you consider film to be art, you'd be hard pressed to say that Cliff wasn't criticizing the quality of that film in his quote and using his subjective feelings on it as a reason why his company didn't want to release it.

So, it's ok when Scream Factory employees critique someone else's art, but not theirs?

At the end of the day, I do like most of their newly commissioned artwork and I appreciate the option of having the original artwork as well; however, I consider it a sort of paint by numbers version of artwork. It's art in the way that a Bob Ross painting is art. It takes some skill and I couldn't do it. So, I respect it, but they don't really do anything inventive...It's just putting as many headshots as possible on a background. I don't mind it, but it's certainly not some sacrosanct, untouchable work of art.

Covers that show the entire cast just look corny to me and they have a few like that.

Sinner!

Seriously, I can admire good artwork and slipcovers, but I'm not going to lose any sleep if the artwork doesn't look good.

However, I can understand people's beef if the artwork is a possible spoiler.

Complaining is totally silly since the original poster art is available with the flip of a wrist. I dislike most of Shout's new art, but I just flip things over and voila, no problem at all.

The Black Christmas art is pretty terrible, but if they have the original on the other side I am pretty happy.

I'm not the biggest fan of SF's art about half of the time but I love the option of either the newly commissioned art or the original theatrical art. I honestly don't get all of the b*tching unless these are people who have never bought a SF collectors edition. Even then I think that article makes an excellent point of most people displaying their bluray's on a shelf with the spine facing out. Arrow generally has what I consider better designed and commissioned artwork for their releases but that is honestly all just preference. For some SF artwork is wonderful. As much as people don't want to believe this but art is subjective. There some people that think Jackson Pollocks work is brilliant while others think it's overrated garbage. We can debate that all we like, you will not change my opinion on how and what I perceive as good art. While I think Tyler Stout makes excellent posters and is a very talented artist, I generally don't like his style, the overly cramped floating head thing isn't for me. While most of his fans and Mondo fans think differently.

This is getting ridiculous. Don't like the art? Chuck it! The original, generally much-better theatrical art is almost always on the sleeve so there really is no argument about this. I seriously think some people suffer from some kind of disorder that goes beyond being OCD. I wouldn't be surprised if Scream Factory eventually discontinues slipcovers altogether just to get the whining off their case (no pun intended).

They'll never do that. Look at all the people willing to pay more just for an extra slipcover and poster. And the people that might blind buy a title because they like the slipcover. It's good business to include them.

Sorry but I do think they could serve themselves and all current and future customers better by putting more care into their cover art. Too many times it is just lazy. A good product starts with presentation i.e. what is on the store shelf and being looked at by someone who isn't familiar with the product. The fanbase who has already seen and like the film were already going to buy it regardless.

If these are to be the 'definitive' versions of these films then Shout should understand that there will be only more and more new fans that have never seen the likes of The Burning, Squirm, Exorcist III, Black Christmas ect buying these releases. It's only good business to listen and consider customer feedback and not arrogantly push in the other direction basically like 'just be happy you're getting anything'. Yea we get it, you think your business will always coast on milking the older, hardcore fanbase of these films. But it won't always be like that if you expect to grow continuously.

Like I said, it's a paint by numbers sort of situation. Many of their covers are art in the way a Bob Ross painting is art.

I can only picture whoever is putting together these pieces saying to themself, "yeah...let's put a frightened little victim over here. That's right. look how frightened this little guy is. Let's put a pensive looking little guy in this corner. Wonder what he's worried about? Here's a scary looking house. Wonder what's going on in there? Oooohhh, here's the killer. Look how scary he looks twice the size of everyone else in the middle of the picture. Let's give him a shiny happy machete to do his work with...."

Managed to get The Burning and TCM 2 w/slipcovers for $15 each from eBay, one thanks to a nice bid and the other w/a coupon. Very excited to watch both.

Exactly. They know there are plenty of packaging freaks/OCD collectors among their devotees. Why not cater to them?

I get what you are saying but a majority of their business is online. I don't know of any stores that sell all of SF releases. Best Buy carries some of the mainstream releases (carpenter, depalma, etc) but I've never seen Squirm or The Burning in store. Yeah there are small mom & pop shops that carry them but don't expect most stores to. Really their main business is the hardcore horror crowd who already has seen the film or excited to see it since they have already heard of it. I don't buy films based on their posters, that's a shit way to go about wasting $30. The cover may catch my attention (good and/or bad) and I'll look it up to see if it's something I'm interested in.
