Reguarding Tales From The Hood, that was a Savoy Pictures production. Savoy co-distributed titles with New Line Cinema and Rysher Entertainment (which also had its home video output through HBO/Warner), and also picked up distribution for Last of the Dogmen from a falling Carolco. Savoy filed for chapter 11 and was then purchased by a company called InterActive, while Time Warner/HBO owned US distribution rights to the Savoy Pictures catalog until 2005, when Focus Features (a sub-label of Universal) bought them.
What Focus/Universal got were only the titles Savoy solely distributed on its own (eg. TFH and a Bronx Tale). The titles that were co-distributed with or picked up from other companies are with their respective owners (Last of the Dogmen is believed to be with Studio Canal and Lionsgate, New Line titles like The Stupids are with Time Warner, while Rysher co-productions like House Arrest and Turbulence are now with Paramount) |

Oh wow! I completely forgot about that movie! That's the one with the great Fred Ward right? I saw that on video when I was a kid but the only thing I remember was that he was a private detective or something. I remember liking it though. Thanks for the reminder on that one!

Knowing about branding and companies is very interesting when it comes to knowing what can be released, but its also extremely confusing when some companies own titles from a company that was purchased by a big three name. |

I'm really surprised they are releasing Virus. It's not a film I ever hear anyone talk about, it's not a cult classic or a genre fav to my knowledge. It was a huge bomb at the time and got really bad reviews, even from horror and sci fi buffs.

They released Supernova, which might be the worst studio sci-fi release after the 50's schlock era. If they made money on that why not release Virus? I'd like to see every movie ever made get a BD release, ideally.

Supernova at least has an interesting production history behind it. Virus is just a garden variety piece of crap that failed.

From what I've seen of that movie is laughable, terrible late-90s futuristic production design like Wing Commander and Insurrection. James Spader just being himself on a spaceship sounds boring. |

Being a huge horror fan, I saw lots of these types of movies at the theatre: Virus, Supernova, Deep Rising, Event Horizon, etc.- most of them aren't worth revisiting, imo. All very derivative and lackluster. But if you like one of these types, cool, and glad people get a Blu-ray of them.

Personally, I dislike a lot of Scream releases and I wouldn't add them to my collection for free, but I love that they put the amount of effort into the silliest sequel or derivative knock-off that Criterion would give a European art-house classic.
I may roll my eyes at some titles but I also know that when it comes time for Manhunter, The Thing, Black Christmas, etc. that same dedication to supplements and packaging is going to pay off beautifully. One man's Poltergeist 3 is another man's Carrie. I'll admit to not being excited for the spate of releases announced on Halloween, but there are genre aficionados who will be, and sooner or later something I love will be announced.I can't wait. |

Boyle: Cool! Awesome. There's a bunch of movie options. I'll probably just go with something classic like Citizen Kane. Diaz: Citizen Kane is terrible. Pick a good movie. Boyle: Good call. Smart. I'll do it. I'll pick a better movie than Citizen Kane. I personally like Virus. The techno body horror, most of the cast, TERROR ON A BOAT. I watched the German release recently and still enjoyed it. My saw-as-a-kid-omg-so-cool blinders are rarely on, it just feels like another decent enough 90's sci-fi flick. Maybe good for the final movie of the night in a marathon that's winding down OR starting up. With Deep Rising and the classic horror movie The Titanic. Mark me down as another glad to get a Scream release for Virus. |
