It was easier to be original in 1972 than it is now. We all love originality, but a film needs more than that. The original Last House on the Left just reeks of lack of talent (past a couple of people). Moreover, it wasn't totally original as Craven was influenced by The Virgin Spring. The original TCM was a lot of what TLHOTL wanted to be.
I'm sure it got to some people back then, but it just doesn't hold up while TCM and the original Night of the Living Dead both do. Both of which also have non actors and a small budget, but claustrophobia will always been a thing no matter what decade it is. That's why Night of the Living Dead retains its power while a lot of people I know laugh at The Last House on the Left. It had some idea's, but ultimately the flaws are just too big. IMO of course. |

The Poughkeepsie tapes deals with a lot of taboo material for a major studio. Rape of children, torture/killing of children, Necrophillia, torture, and torment on a scale that rivals the worst any major studio has released in the last 20 years. My guess is that the studio picked it up and then upon reviewing the content quickly realized that it wasn't something they could release theatrically and so it was shelved. A film like Saw, or Hostel has it's moments of meta-humor despite the attrocities on screen. The Poughkeepsie tapes is just a mean spirited piece of cinema that would have been right at home in the 1970's grindhouse environment, but not so much in a modern theater from a respected studio like MGM.

With the announcement of a CE of Teen Wolf (and Teen Wolf Too), we're now one step closer to the MGM double-dip well running dry. Only six possibilities now left (Robocop and Terminator notwithstanding):
Last House on the Left (1972) Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) Cyborg (1989) Misery (1990) Silence of the Lambs (1991) Hannibal (2001) Silence is with a label, possibly Scream but most likely Criterion. Even so, it would probably make business sense for Scream to release Hannibal around the same time, presuming Silence is coming later this year. Mister Lime suggested Misery might have been picked up, so that seems very likely for Scream. Killer Klowns has been shot down in the past, but it seems a strong possibility unless Arrow beat them to it. Cyborg, again I would say it's only probable if better elements can be found for the director's cut. Last House has been discussed. |

They initially said summer, so I'd expect a July or August release, unless something has changed. If it's coming in July, expect a date and artwork reveal over the next couple of weeks.

CYBORG I just got in a three pack, so I'd probably pass. MISERY I'd get for sure. I haven't bought that since the old MGM DVD. HANNIBAL is a hard pass. I really found that movie to be a chore to sit through. SILENCE I'm hoping is back with Criterion, though I'd probably grab a Scream disc. KILLER KLOWNS I'd be happy if was put out by Arrow because I would get it for free as a gold backer. I wouldn't buy a Scream disc for it. The MGM disc is good enough for me. |

Just to be clear I wasn't referring to MGM DVDs yet to be upgraded (there's still quite a few more of those). Just titles MGM previously released on Blu-ray. The MGM well as a whole is far from exhausted.
The Day After will almost certainly be coming from Kino btw, it was an ABC title licenced by MGM. Also, some of those you list aren't titles relevant to Scream. Last edited by BarnDoor; 03-22-2017 at 05:10 PM. |

![]() I always felt the Teen Wolf films are borderline. Horror comedy, sci-fi, thriller, post-apocalyptic flicks seem to qualify for the Scream line based on previous releases. Something like Blue Steel is probably more of a Shout Select title, though I heard it's no longer with MGM and might be with Lionsgate. |

Those would be with Universal and may not be part of the current deals. It's also worth noting that those would be substantial enough announcements to some folks that they would be saved for Comic Con, so it's possible that they are being prepped for an October or November release but an announcement won't come until July. (Though in the Case of Jaws, having them ready for release by August would make the most sense).

So I just finished re-watching the Poughkeepsie tapes a few moments ago after it being brought up earlier in the week and do feel like the film is ripe for inclusion in the Scream Factory Line Up. I think the curiosity factor alone would be enough to generate a fair amount of Buzz and sales. I could see MGM asking to have their name removed from the credits if they cared enough, but this film would fit somewhere between modern horrors from the IFC deal like The Human Centipede, and the older classics most of us get excited over. I know I would certainly pick it up and would be curious to see what, if any, sort of special features could be included. If nothing else I'd love to read/watch an interview with someone from MGM or "behind the scenes" on why the film never saw any sort of official release.
Not a film I ever expect to see as I expect it will remain buried ala "Clownhouse" but it is an interesting thought none the less. |
