Are products bought on Shout Factory's home-site more likely to come with slip covers? Or is it still a crap shoot?

They guarantee them for the first 3 months.

Agreed. They want to make us spend more on shipping which is pretty shitty for a sale. When they have those sales I don't pay attention. Just not worth it.

It depends of how long a title has been out and how fast it sells.

I ordered direct from SF years ago but don't remember if I got hit with duty or not. Can any fellow Canadians let me know? Thanks!

Its not that they couldn't get it, at one point Shout! was wanting to license from Sony, but Sony had the stipulation of not allowing to port legacy features to a newly produced BD or produce new features for their titles (And if the features were to be produced, the features would become Sony's property automatically). So it sounded like Sony did not make things very easy at that time, so I don't blame the Shout! peeps to move on to greener pasture.

Sony's policy might of changed these days, but they are sill odd ducks in my eyes.(Choice Collection BD-R's, Mill Creek & Twilight Time licensing, POP Art Steelbooks)

SF has released several titles with little to no extras. I'd rather have Sony titles with no extras (or extras ported from DVD/LD releases) than to not have those titles at all.

I'll probably pick up Return of the Living Dead if it's on sale. I watched it sort of recently and wasn't too impressed after not seeing it for some years. But it does pay great tribute to Romero's 1968 classic, my all time favorite zombie film, and has naked women dancing on graves. So, why the hell not.

On that note, does anybody think this release will still come with one of those outer boxes that go around the blu-ray case?

That's something I didn't know but I feel if it came with a slip initially then all the pressings should have them.

Slipcovers exist primarily, if not solely, to motivate early sales.

Agreed. I prefer physical media. However, the digital copies are great when you travel, or visiting people who are not into either format. I'm the only person in my family, that collects movies or even goes to movies regularly. Everyone else is, "I'll wait till Netflix or cable"!

Yeah I can see those points you made about traveling or maybe during down time at work you can watch a movie from a digital copy.

If I watched movies on vacation on a tablet I think my wife would kill me. The only time I could see it being useful is on the plane, but I just do crosswords or whatever.

I collect for the movies. I don't care about the physical copy per se, but it is currently a better form of ownership for a few reasons. I think that collectors of movies will gradually have to embrace an expanded definition of collecting which involves some form of digital ownership, because over the next five or ten years, there will almost certainly be more and more catalog titles worth owning which are only distributed digitally. Including digital copies is just a variation of future-proofing for people who don't want to rip copies themselves, though I'm sure some people want them to be included so they can sell them off and off-set some of the cost of the item.

There is definitely going to be more and more digital exclusive releases over the coming decades. I actually think a lot of low interest newer movies will go that route. Popular catalog stuff can probably always get a label release, but it depends on the market. I think the vast majority of movies will probably never look better than they do on Blu-ray, removing the concern about future releases.

Unfortunately I'm trying to get my hands on some of the older releases. Darkman, They Live, and UHF primarily. I'll probably have to turn to Ebay instead.

I just find it bizarre that some of the responders here think people who only care about digital are going to go to a store, have their attention caught by disc artwork, and buy that disc FOR THE DIGITAL COPY. Digital-only people are just going to buy the digital copy directly so they don't have plastic cluttering up their house. Like, if you turn on an xbox or a playstation, you'll get spammed with offers to buy copies of new films. Or, you can just open the Vudu app, or the Amazon app, or whatever else. Much more convenient than going to buy a plastic case from a store, get out a paper slip, choose one of the many sites (they really need to stop this convoluted BS with vudu/flixster/etc all ending up putting it in the same place), and type out the code, all to achieve the same result that just buying it directly off the service would have, and likely at a greater cost since you're paying for the physical object as well. Ah well.

This all has the added benefit of having the option of a streaming copy, while these kinds of obscure movies are often copy/download-only due to not paying the studios whatever surcharges they would have to to get them on apps that are on the average consumer device.

If you wait long enough the discs with the codes do often end up cheaper than the digital copies alone do, I guess (ex, that recent Saw Complete Collection clearance on Amazon for 5 bucks that had a UV code for all 7 movies).

ANYWAY, I guess none of that had anything to do with Scream. If they got some kind of deal with one of the major services I'd definitely like the codes. If they made you download a copy off their site, I can't really see myself ever using it anyway.

I live just down the street from a used movie store, and it's really amazing how many times I'll walk in there to see a mint-condition copy of a Blu-ray title that was just released a day or two before, because the original purchaser bought the movie just for the digital code and then sold or traded in the actual physical product.

Like you, I don't really get it, but I'm happy that I'm occasionally able to buy Blu-rays that are basically brand-spanking new for just $10 or so.

No matter. I'll still pick up Return of the Living Dead. After all, it still comes with the movie.
