LOL - do any of you guys who order direct from ShoutFactory ever get multiple copies of the same disc sent to you?
I just opened my mailbox and found 3 copies of A QUIET PLACE IN THE COUNTRY (I double checked my order history on their site and definitely only ordered and paid for 1 copy)!! |

I wonder if a certain warehouse is having shipping glitches again. This happened to a Twilight Time order of mine a little while back and a few other labels (I think Shout too) using the same warehouse IIRC. I know TT has since moved their stock to a new one.

I would give the extras away, but I already contacted SF to have them look into the matter - just wanted to make sure I wasn't charged three times (one disc already cost me $33 with tax and shipping). They will probably arrange for a return.

I had just placed an order on Monday which arrived today in 2 packages from 2 separate warehouses. We'll see if I end up getting duplicates of anything. During my previous experiences with Shout I've never received a duplicate though about 8 years ago Amazon sent me two copies of Terminator 3, so that's been my only experience with duplicates.

All right, I have just watched one of the most gloriously bad films ever made, and I loved every awful minute of it!
If you loved Showgirls, if you think Harold Robbins is a hoot, then prepare yourself for more over the top acting and awful dialogue than you could shake a can of cheez whiz at. The Lonely Lady is based a novel by the king of soap opera, Harold Robbins and starring munchkin lounge singer and original lonely lady, Pia Zadora, who was married at the time to multimillionaire Israeli sugar daddy, Meshulam Riklis, who bears most of the "credit" for this film's existence. It's a deliciously bad story (in taste, and otherwise) of a naive young girl, Jerilee Randall (Zadora), who we first see on the eve of her final year in High School as she receives an award for her writing at the school assembly. The prize is a gold paper mache statuette which looks a lot like the Oscar. After the party, ignoring her perpetually unsympathetic harridan of a mother (a nasty piece of work played by Bibi Besch), she accepts an invitation by one of her 90210 classmates to a little party at his dad's house. The boy's father, Walter (a smug and unbelievably hirsute Lloyd Bochner) just happens to be a famous Hollywood screenwriter. Sooo, how could she resist? Heading to the party, things go from nice to nasty when her classmate's friend, Joe Heron (a sneering, volatile first film appearance by the great Ray Liotta) decides that he will give Jerilee just what she deserves, against her will, right there at the edge of the pool. Thus starts the beginning of Jerilee's abuse in her quest to make it as a screenwriter in tinsel town. As one of her "friends" tells her early on, "If you're an actress in this business, you can't afford self respect." I guess that applies to aspiring screenwriters too, as she is used and abused by everyone and everything: male, female, whatever. Hold onto your hats as this film contains: -Jerilee acquiring her big break as a Hollywood screenwriter for one repeated word...."Why??" "Why??"! -Lawn watering implements put to unethical and unhygenic uses! -One of the most hilariously absurd psychedelic mental breakdowns ever captured on film! A dozen screaming Pias rotating in dizzy arcs around herself projected on top of a swirling hypnotic backdrop! -Dialogue so bad that it transcends bad! So weird and wonderful since this is a film about a talented screenwriter! -Good sport Pia Zadora who gamely gives it her all throughout the copious nude scenes in this picture! Even includes a completely gratuitous shower scene! -And, last but certainly not least, an ending that caught me off guard and caused me to literally laugh out loud in appreciation! It really is the feather cap on this film. And that's not all! There's an engaging recent interview with star, Pia Zadora, who talks about her career and this film with some real candor and humor. After watching this interview I found her quite likeable. The PQ is advertised as a high definition transfer taken from the interpositive and presented in the original aspect ratio. The image shows considerable wear throughout the first 5 minutes or so of the film with speckles and pops in the audio. After that the image improves but remains quite soft to my untrained eyes. It looks just like one of Shout's typical secondary status releases, a bit soft but functional. The AQ is decent. It allows one to appreciate(?) the astoundingly bad, but fitting theme song, written by Charles Calello and Roger Voudouris and lovingly crooned by Larry Graham! One of two wonderfully awful films put out this year by Shout. The other is the amazing Scorchy starring a must see it to believe it acting turn by cute, minnie mouse voiced Connie Stevens. These two films share a lot of bad dialogue and a lot of heart by the two stars. Highest recommendation for aficionados of so-bad-they're-fantastic bad movies (you know who you are). This one is a real gem. Obviously, this review is strictly my humble opinion. Last edited by billy pilgrim; 09-08-2017 at 06:25 PM. |

You'd likely get a better response/conversation in the Shout Select thread. I have no problem with conversations floating between the two threads but this film sounds like something that I'd have 0 interest in and is about as far away from what the Scream brand specializes in and caters too. Maybe others will chime in and a lively conversation will spring up, but I feel like given the length and effort of your post, it would likely be better appreciated in the Shout Select thread.

I think they released "The Lonely Lady" under their new banner, Shit Factory. Great write up though, Pilgrim. That film is truly insane. I especially liked the description of Lloyd Bochner as "smug and unbelievably hirsute".

I started an account on Letterboxd. Right now, it's mostly reviews of newer films that I saw at the theater, but I've also retroactively added some movie content reviews from my write-ups on this site. I will be slowly adding archived reviews to the site as I stumble across them here. I will probably never be able to list every single movie that I've reviewed on this forum, but this is a start. A Letterboxd account is not as self-indulgent as an actual blog, and it's also easy to add movies, since I don't have to worry about artwork, etc. This will make it easy for me to look up my own past reviews, and that's the main attraction for me. I'll go live with it and add the link to my signature shortly, after I get the feel of the site and straighten out some rough edges. |

I'm a huge film fan and I enjoy writing, so these reviews are fun for me and hopefully others find them enjoyable and informative. Perhaps possibly even helping others in discovering a film they might have overlooked. Kind of a quandary at times, which section to post these in. So other members' assistance and suggestions are greatly welcomed. |
