They could try following some U.K. labels’ lead and create slimmed down “supermarket editions” and price them between $5 and 7.50 or so... if it meant funding future acquisitions like Martin and Dawn of the Dead, I’d be all for it.

They've done this already with some double feature releases of The fog/the howling, jeepers creepers 1&2 and a few others as well.

Interestingly as it pertains to Jeepers Creepers. Wal-Mart currently has both the original MGM double feature and the Scream Factory version in store. The MGM version includes both movies on separate discs with a fair amount of bonus features for the first film for $7.96. Conversely, The Scream Factory version includes both films on a single disc with no special features whatsoever for $9.96. In regards to these particular films the picture quality is more or less going to be equal (though the Scream Factory does have the more pleasing color palette in my opinion). So while yes, these are slimmed down cheaper editions compared to what Scream Factory typically offers, and depending on the title (The Fog/The Howling for instance) might make for a decent bargain, other examples (Jeepers Creepers) still do not make much sense when their are better versions available for less.

Mad Max sold well because it was so cheap. I do not believe that the popularity of the title had as much to do with its success as the $5 price point at Target and $8 price at Walmart. I would quite literally purchase every single title Shout Factory release if it fell between those two prices, so it's unrealistic to use that title as any sort of measuring stick. A much better one in my opinion would be to look at the sales results of titles that have been featured in store at Best Buy for the $14.99 price. That price is much more reasonable in terms of expectations and yet still seen as a value. I think it'd be interesting to see sales numbers from the date of announcement/pre-order up until the titles went on sale at Best Buy, and then to compare that time frame to the numbers that were sold while the title was available at the $14.99 price. $14.99 - $17.99 is a much more mainstream audience friendly price. It's also a price as a collector that I will double (or triple) dip a title on even if I don't love a film. (Land of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Drag me to Hell, etc...).

I don't believe Shout Factory needs to necessarily go the full slimmed down model to capture more market share, I do think that they need to more aggressively price titles however especially when it comes to sales. If you don't want to lower MSRP then get in the habit of having 2-3x per year 50% sales at a minimum. Also drop prices on titles that 3-4 years old... by that amount of time there is no reason not to drop prices to entice hold out buyers. Case in point... They Live. I refuse to pay more than $14.99 for that title yet here I am still waiting for it to hit that price despite the much lower MSRP compared to the recent Collectors editions.

One, I think in general people are moving to more digital formats, netflix, etc. Two, if a non-collector, everyday buyer is at the store and they see a cheap $5 copy, a $20 copy (yes, this particular one is cheaper now), which do you think they're buying? I don't think the casual buyers are buying the same movie for over double the price just because it comes in different packaging. Food for thought.
- I'm not sure where you're at with Mad Max as an example. They've claimed that Mad Max was one of the line's biggest sellers.

- It looks like WB's various releases of Trick 'r Treat are OOP, so there may not be a $5.00 edition of that available in stores. Don't be surprised to see some of the other older WB titles go OOP, as well.

- I'm not a fan, but the Steelbooks must be doing fairly well for them or they surely would've dropped their production runs from 10,000 units or stopped making them altogether after the first wave or two. Ditto for the action figures, posters/lithographs and other accoutrements.

That's the thing. This lineup has a fair or better chance to land four or more titles from the October lineup, not including the two IFC Midnight releases, onto the shelves of major brick and mortars. That probably wouldn't be the case for most new-to-Blu titles. Definitely not The Wasp Woman, but the others are all toss-ups or better.

well said and I completely agree.. I also have a big problem with non-collector's editions sitting at the $20 mark for what seems like forever--- THE CAR, VIRUS, DEAD OF WINTER, etc. It seems like these titles should at the very least drop to $15 but I haven't seen it.....

I was trying to state a far less detailed account of what TripleHBK just posted above. Maybe Mad Max was a bad example - I used it as more of an "in theory" type of example. Overall, the point was that most of the general public will choose the cheaper version if they're given an option. Even as a collector, you better give me a real good reason to pay double the going rate for the same movie. As someone who doesn't watch the special features very often, I'm mainly looking at audio/video. Even still, similar to what HBK said, maybe charge a $5 premium, even $10 perhaps. Don't think their releases deserve to be double, or triple what's out there already. But hey - more power to them if it's working for them.

Maybe part of the problem is that almost every release these days seems to be a "collectors edition" so they ask a premium for it. I feel like they used to be more selective what was released as a collectors edition.

Mad Max being cheap is 100% the reason why i double dipped - the trilogy blu-ray was more than sufficient, but i love the poster art.anything more than the $10 i paid would have been a no-sale

It's Critters or bust for me, make that box set happen.

Also wouldn't mind a Friday the 13th surprise...when the 13th actually falls right it should be considered a horror holiday second to only Halloween.

Wow, 10 is a lot. Fingers crossed for great news but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. For all I know it could be 5 steelbooks, 4 re-releases and 1 unreleased .
