To me if there are scratches on the disc, regardless if they affect playback, it is a damaged product and should be replaced even if the issue is cosmetic. People are paying for "new" discs and "new" discs do not come pre-scratched. |

A scratch on those inner circles could lead to cracks and cracks are potentially catastrophic. That area may be insignificant when it comes to disc playback but it's a sensitive stress point that could cause a disc to break if too much force is used to remove it. A scratch is indicative of poor handling during the manufacturing phase. That's never a good thing, needless to say.

A benefit to ordering from Amazon. Tell them it's scratched or messed up and they'll send a new one. By the sounds of it, there's no guarantee you'd get a non-scratched one in return if it's a widespread problem. Shout related, my Saved by the Bell set came really messed up. The shrink wrap was much looser than usual and the outer box was broken in some places (not just dented but ripped straight through). I could have lived with that but I would have been annoyed. What made me contact Amazon for a replacement is that 2 of the actual DVD cases were cracked/broken and one of the discs was out of its hub and badly scratched. I wonder if it's something with their new manufacturing/processing plant.

Not scratch related, but my local record store ALWAYS has all the indie label releases early and on-hand. I went in today to see if they had Creepshow, since they usually get these and Arrow items 2-3 weeks early like Diabolik does. I talked to the guy I always see and he tells me that he cannot order these titles anymore. He had TrickrTreat, but said they just came in and he had to beg to get it. Says he cannot order Haunted Hill or Creepshow from his distributor, but he will try to get it. He also mentioned that some prices have went up. I asked him about other upcoming releases, as he had the recent stock sheet in front of him and he did not see Valley Girl or Candyman on there at all. I know they had a disk distribution problem and I mentioned that to him. He says that might be it, but usually the items are at least on the upcoming list, so that's not it. He seems to believe that they want to cut out places like his for Collectors Editions and do direct from Shout only. I shuddered to believe, but seems to be consistent with what is going on with them.
Just to throw this in also, my pre-order of Haunted Hill and Creepshow from Shout still has not shipped yet... Hence me looking for a copy.. Last edited by jcs913; 10-17-2018 at 05:25 PM. |

from FB:
"Our customer service department is experiencing the heaviest volume of inquiries we’ve ever been faced in the brand’s history, largely due to the recent forced shift in manufacturing which has affected us getting you product on release date. Your business and support is greatly appreciated and we humbly ask that you please bear with us and exert some patience during this extremely busy time with several anticipated releases. If you have sent them a question or concern at info@shoutfactory.com please be assured that they have received it, are not ignoring you and are trying their best to respond in a timely manner. Thank you." |

WTF does their reply mean? Are aliens holding them at gunpoint forcing them to raise prices?

Not matter what happens with the lawsuit, doesn’t Paramount still own the rights to parts 1-8?

And yes, I’m willing to cut them a little slack. They’re sending people replacement discs, and fast. Sure, they used phrasing in their statement to discourage returns for a cosmetic issue, but if you email them and say you’re not happy with the product and you’re concerned a scratch like that could lead to a larger issue down the line, they’re not going to deny you a replacement. Their customer service in this respect has always been immaculate. I’ve never had to send them a disc back before they’d send another. They don’t make me wait 4-6 weeks in order to get my replacement, either. The process has always been quick and painless. It’s frustrating that their releases tend to regularly have some sort of problem that warrants a replacement, but their customer service has always made this process tolerable. Contrast that with Universal Studios and what they’ve done with the Creature set… where people are still waiting for replacement discs and have no clue when they’re going to be ready to ship out. I requested a replacement for a scratched up The Howling disc just recently and I had the new disc within a week. No fuss, no muss, and it’s always been that way. The issue here isn’t that Shout/Scream made a statement that basically discourages the return of an issue they consider to be cosmetic. It’s more of a perfect storm that’s been caused by some of their recent business decisions coupled with their pricing model, and delays that have been the direct result of a situation that’s completely out of their control. This has all been piling up for people and it isn’t taking much for people to make the decision to walk away from this distribution company. They have every right to make that choice, by the way… it’s their money. However, I’m not sure what else Shout/Scream are supposed to do for this particular issue with Trick ‘R Treat. They’re going to replace discs and they appear to be doing it in a timely manner. Hate them for charging high pricing and not allowing Amazon or even smaller companies to sell their products day and date or for lower prices… but for this to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back seems almost silly to me. A lot of angry people are just looking for any chance to get angrier right now. Under the circumstances, that’s understandable, but still silly if we’re only talking about how they’re handling the scratched discs. |
