Open the box and Pinhead comes and kills you is a different version of, set up a tent in the woods and Jason comes and kills you. Hook chains or a machete it's all just their weapon of choice. Same with Leatherface and TCM. It's not that movies fault Rob Zombie made ripoff movies, and it shouldn't be penalized for it.

Group of kids go here and get killed by masked killer is pretty much Slasher 101.
Fair enough, and good point. The masked killer thing actually makes a lot of sense when classifying the genre. Although I'm sure there are plenty slashers where the killer doesn't wear a mask, it's still a very valid generalization of the sub-genre. That being said, I think it solidifies my thoughts on the pinhead thing. He's almost more of a monster than a masked killer. It's like Leprechaun, wouldn't classify those as slashers even though he's out there killing people. Maybe you could, I don't know. This discussion has me flip flopping.

I put Leps. Chucky, Slickerman, madman mars and the guy from Final Exam in the slasher cat. The mask helps but isn't mandatory. Just like Dr. Decker would make a fantastic slasher character but Nightbreed isn't a slasher movie.

For me there are "slashers" as in the characters themselves fit more or less into this idea of a killer that is hacking and slicing apart his victims (typically teens) in outlandish and violent manners, and then there are "SLASHERS" as in the sub-genre with a very defined sense of structure and appearance which a film more or less must adhere to in order for it to be a "pure" slasher in my book . Leprechaun, Pinhead, Leatherface and even Freddy all fall under the more loose "slasher" subgenre definition which is why I won't argue if people refer to them as slashers. The same goes for Black Christmas and Psycho. However none of these are what I think of what I think of when I think of the Slasher sub-genre as a defined style of filmmaking.

-The Burning
-Slumber Party Massacre
-Friday the 13th Parts 1-3
-Madman
-Graduation Day
-Final Exam
-Halloween 1 & 2
-Silent Night Deadly Night
-Christmas Evil
-My Bloody Valentine
-The Prowler
-Etc

These are the films that I consider "SLASHERS" through and through in every sense of the word. There are a million slasher esque films out there, but those add elements of the supernatural, humor, or too much personality otherwise leading me to consider the films Slasher like, but not pure slashers.

Talking specifically about Freddy for a moment, I had never once considered him or those movies "Slashers" growing up. It wasn't until the last decade or so where I saw various people and horror countdown shows/lists starting to lump him in where I began to associate the two.

There are of course no set rules for what does and doesn't make something a slasher, there are however certain elements that are needed within a film for it to feel right to label a film as such. Films within a very small window of 1978 to 1985 or so are the most likely to fit my own "Pure" Slasher definition. Films outside of that range often feel similar but aren't quite the same. (Scream being the biggest example in my mind as I don't consider that film a slasher in much of any way if I'm being honest).

I find conversations like these often very entertaining as a result and am always happy to hear what others think.

As a few have mentioned in other threads, a lot of the August/September Shout Films are on sale at Target and have 20% off today and tomorrow only. I was able to pick up all of the releases I was interested in (including JC's Vampires) for under $20.00.

It's largely open to interpretation, that's why I like these conversations as well. Interesting to hear others opinions, especially when it doesn't result in straight up arguing/bashing. I'm not here for those types of battles.

There is one thing I'm sure of though. The show "Slasher" is definitely in the slasher genre. Good show if you haven't seen it!

Halloween is the crown jewel of slashers, it perfected the formula and set the mold for decades of other movies

I personally don’t like to give F13 too much credit for slasher impact. The wheels were already moving following Halloween, and The Burning and Madman were both being developed around the same time.
Friday the 13th blew the doors off what Halloween started. Its success and continued pop culture placing are undeniable. Say what you will about the creative side of the movies, but it most certainly is what influenced the post-1980 wave of slasher films, and this is why most film-zines and other industry folk use the term "In the wake of Halloween AND Friday the 13th."

Both The Burning and Madman went into production AFTER Friday the 13th's release, and they are most certainly influenced as such (A case can be made that The Burning is even better, but that's subjective.) Weinstein can proclaim all day long that he had The Burning in mind before F13, but with his reputation (even before his current status) I wouldn't believe a word from his mouth.

In the end, it doesn't matter who gets what credit because, for good or bad, both Halloween and Friday the 13th are fully secured in horror history.

To be on topic,

I'm not going to hold any high expectations of this year's Comic Con announcements, but I am keeping an open mind and hope to be surprised. "Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

Do you know what the greatest slasher movie of all time is?

It's got the greatest killer ever.

Stalks it's victims.

Climatic final battle.

Music/theme every time the killer is near/on screen.

POV shots....... yes you guessed it.......

No one will convince me otherwise

TCM is a variation of Old Dark House, not a slasher, just modified for Vietnam era viewing.

Hard to be considered a slasher when you aren't even a horror movie.

Yeah I said it.

JAWS. ISN'T. A. HORROR. MOVIE.

Jaws and the Jurassic Park are the hardest movies to classify genre. Ultimately neither get classified as horror in my collection, I lump them as action. Terrifying movies, but not fundamentally horror. It goes both way, plenty of things that I would call horror that aren’t necessarily scary but has a horror essence/tone

Jaws is definitely a horror movie. It's basically a monster movie.
