I agree with both sides of the coin, however If anything, I think announcing that a title is going OOP would make it sell out faster, thus leaving room in the warehouses for new product.
I myself spent about $100 in the past few days to pick up a few of the Scream/Kino titles that I've always meant to pick up, but never got around to it for one reason or another. |

But I do agree these titles are no doubt going out of print as a result of lack of sales. Nothing that's leaving so far is really a top tier title, so I don't doubt people have just waited and didn't really want them as bad as they do now. It's amazing what scarcity can do. I'm only really wanting The Sure Thing. Haha |

I think boutique labels can avoid the headaches of having to deal with overstock simply by conducting surveys asking people what they want to see released as opposed to just throwing titles out there to see what sticks. It's a simple enough solution and the only potential roadblock I see to doing this would be if labels acquire a package of titles that includes films that have very limited appeal, in which case they would have no choice but to release them. There's a lot of content out there that only a few people would be willing to spend upwards of $20 on. Obviously, competition from a dozen other boutiques plus studio product also factor into why some titles just don't sell. It's ironic, isn't it? The end of physical media has been predicted for years but labels are currently at each other's throats competing for movies.

Video labels licence films for a preset amount of years. There are no indefinite licences unless they outright own the films. As a filmmaker who has a movie released by one of the companies that has a section on this forum I can tell you that deals are final based on what is agreed in the original contract. It can be a 5 year deal, a 7 year deal, etc. The labels are given an opportunity to sell off their overstock if they still have some after the period. If a label has a movie for 5 years, they pretty much sold as much of the title as they can hope. Renewing for another 5 years would mean low sales. It's not lack of sales that makes a title go out of print. It's the time frame of the licensing contract. For indie filmmakers, it's best to go to a new label after the contract is over as there will be new promotion etc. Sticking with the old label often means no new promotion and very little in royalties.

Guess it's time for me to stop slacking on Pumpkinhead and Lifeforce. Always wanted them, just keep procrastinating. Was hoping they would be cheaper than the $27CAD they're currently posted at but don't want to risk missing out. Outside of that, I think I have all the big MGM ones I want covered. Dolls...maybe Dolls. Maybe Garbage Pail Kids.

Just my two cents, but it might be premature to start assuming certain MGM titles are going to go OOP. Might be best to wait and see which ones are marked as "Not available" at Shout's website before making purchases...Amazon and others will still have stock for a little while, so one won't have to worry about losing out on a title immediately. This might be a situation similar to what's happening over at Kino...certain titles nearing the end of their license aren't selling well enough to justify running off a new batch. Shout may have even a year or more on their license with some of these discontinued titles and just don't want to bother pressing any more.

That being said...The Amityville Horror Trilogy set is also now listed as "Not Available" on Shout's site. :-(

The more I think about it...the more I wonder if these titles aren't just going to be re-released by Scream in new editions...steelbooks or Collector's Editions with new scans. In the past, Shout/Scream always gave a heads up on titles they were losing due to rights issues...the Golden Harvest library, Vincent Price Volume 1, and even the first edition of Lifeforce because it had that one bonus feature. But perhaps the reason they're silent now is because they know these will be re-released and they don't want to be crucified by their fanbase for hyping discontinued product they know they'll be bringing back out on the market. It just kind of strains the imagination that they relicensed Ninja III...but not Invaders from Mars or the Amityville films. It seems more likely that, as they are selling out of these at their site, they list them as "Not Available", discontinue them...and then maybe make plans for a new edition. Maybe not with all these titles...after all, Incredible Melting Man has had a lot of mileage on it...but for several of them, I can see more units to be sold.

More than just about any of their competitors, Shout's library consists of titles I'd feel pretty confident would get re-released. That is, as long psychical media doesn't truly die out soon. 80's horror well be the last viable genre in the waning days of physical media. But even Shout's non-horror titles tend to be well known genre films that are popular with enthusiasts.

Thanks to the couple people that replied to my previous post in support of the movie Dolls. Going to look at it more closely now. Not much of a special features watcher but I'm more curious now. |

Hey Scream/Shout fans. Here to help you out knowing what MGM titles are OOP or going OOP soon, so get them while you can. Just so you don't freak out, Shout and MGM still have a strong relationship. However, as it's been noted in previous posts, licensing periods for films end, and if the sales aren't strong enough to warrant licensing them again, they go out of print. So get them where you can before you have to pay exorbitant prices for them!
