I've been trying to get more into Hammer stuff but this isn't the way to do it
I understand your issue. I mention accidentally have done this myself. When I mentioned this topic before and I got threadcrapped.

Unfortunately The Stepford Wives is no longer with Paramount, it was merely licenced by them for DVD release to coincide with the remake. It's part of a package of films with some entity who are apparently asking for an absurd amount.

Bristol-Myers Squibb, a major New York-based pharmaceutical company that generates about $20 billion in revenue per year.

I wonder if that old Anchor Bay DVD of The Stepford Wives is worth anything.

That's the one. Sounds like they could do with the extra revenue from licencing these titles out then...

Obviously The Stepford Wives means peanuts to a company like that. If it's not going to generate millions it's not worth their time. Which is a real shame because The Stepford Wives is a real classic that deserves a quality release. Frustrating.

Not to mention The Heartbreak Kid, Sleuth and a few others, including one I'd love to see on Blu, Law and Disorder. According to the Kino Insider, When Michael Calls, To Kill a Clown, The Strange Vengeance of Rosalie and What Became of Jack and Jill? are also part of their holdings. Not sure what else is part of the package, though something called The Darwin Adventure and a couple more TV movies look to be.

In short, if Shout were to somehow agree a deal with Bristol-Myers Squibb, there's 5 Scream candidates in there, plus at least 3 for the Select line.

I don't understand why they're hoarding these films. Maybe they'll throw their hat in the ring for the streaming wars and launch their own subscription service. Bristol Myers Streaming. Because we really need another one of those.

How the hell did a drug company get involved in filmmaking? Other examples of WTF associations/ownership:

Gladden Paint financed a string of films in the 80's, including Mannequin
Trane, the Air Conditioning company, had a hand in producing Shock Waves (1977)
And in one of the most infamous cases, Coca-Cola briefly owned Columbia Pictures in the mid-80's. Any others?

I believe Night of the Juggler has (regrettably) ended up with someone weird, possibly a soap company, I'm not sure.

Because they thought it was a worthwhile investment that could be profitable.

Bing Crosby's production company produced Willard and Ben.

Not quite the same thing but still pretty bizarre when you think about it.

It's not that they are hoarding the films, it's that they are asking too much for licencing the titles out. Being a pharma company they are out of touch with how much revenue is generated by blu-rays these days and having been paid a ton of money for the licences back at the height of the DVD era, they still think that's what they are worth.

I don't think they themselves were involved in filmmaking in anyway. I think it's more likely they swallowed up some company which also owned the production company that made the films.

https://www.bms.com/about-us/our-com...-timeline.html

Edit:...which is factually inaccurate or misleading on multiple counts. Edgar Scherick started Palomar several years prior to that. Variety apparently reported Bristol-Myers acquiring Palomar in 1970, and Stepford Wives wasn't released until 1975.

I saw a 16mm print of this last year and it thoroughly kicks ass. This is close to the top of my dream wishlist. I will not give up hope.

Wait, so Bristol Myers/Palomar also produced Pelham One Two Three? What am I missing here? That one was easily available through MGM

Produced, yes, but I think MGM controls all the rights to the film through United Artists.

Apparently Italy will be getting The Omen boxset on 2/27 without the remake. I wonder if the extra features will be identical to SF release.
