Agreed. I loved the film as a kid and recently revisited it. I still enjoyed it. But it’s certainly got more of a fun Saturday matinee vibe. It’s perfect gateway horror for the kiddos. The biggest letdown is certainly the truncated finale. It’s over and done much too quickly.

I know SILVER BULLET gets a lot of love from many on these forums - and more power to you if you're among them - but I found it mediocre at best. The cast is decent - I especially like Gary Busey as the ne'er-do-well but good-hearted uncle - and does much to make this as watchable as it is. Coming four years after the groundbreaking effects work in THE HOWLING and AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, I found the werewolf here to be quite the cheesy disappointment.

After some terrific initial filmed offerings based on King's work - CARRIE, SALEM'S LOT, THE SHINING, THE DEAD ZONE - this film arrived when the market seemed utterly saturated with King adaptations, many of them emphasizing a tongue-in-cheek approach - to diminishing returns and effect.

I ordered the May pre-order titles, plus the following sale titles...

Alienator
Bad Moon
Eve Of Destruction
Ravenous
Serial Mom

I had just enough money after buying Rolling Stones tickets this morning to go in and grab the above. On payday in a couple of days, I may grab something the Larry Fessenden Collection plus a couple more if they are still in stock.

I never woulda thunk this thread would turn into a Silver Bullet punching bag lol. I've always loved the film and still think it holds up well. A kiddie horror movie? Perhaps but it's way better than something like Monster Squad IMO. And aren't there kids in "It" - another King kiddie film?

I completely dig Silver Bullet. Always have. Not as good as "An American Werewolf In London" & "The Howling", but I dig it a lot.

Now that Scream Factory has a deal with Paramount and with The Keep getting an official DVD release in Australia recently....How many here think that Scream has this title and is saving it for Oct/Nov ?

Kino had it but had to nix the release before it was officially announced, probably because of Michael Mann (they confirmed it was nothing to do with the music/Tangerine Dream). If Mann was the reason I'd be very surprised if Scream fared any better, unless he's had a huge change of heart.

I wonder how this small label in the Australia was able to license it ?

Might be because he's less stringent about what comes out overseas (perhaps his power of veto doesn't extend that far?). Who knows if he's even aware of it? Kino had wanted to do a 4K restoration, another thing more likely to bring the release to his attention.

If SF can get The Keep, that would be a gem. Not holding my breath, but hopefully time heals all wounds.

After the first couple replies came through I thought okay, guess I can take Silver Bullet off my radar. Now a couple on the opposite end. This is why I wish Shout titles were cheaper up here in Canada. Tough to blind buy at such high prices. Always a bit of a gamble.

Perhaps watch the trailer to get a general feel for the film?

I understand that completely--I wait until many of them hit the $15-24 range on Amazon. Silver Bullet is a nostalgic trip for me, so I had no problem pre-ordering it at $24.00, but a viewer's mileage varies depending on their interest in werewolves and lowered expectation--The Howling and AWIL it isn't.

Silver Bullet is selling for $21.99 on U.S. Amazon right now with today's conversion rate that comes to $29.13 CAD

Silver Bullet is selling for $26.99 CAD on Amazon.ca, it's cheaper for a Canadian to buy it.

I've noticed over the past year that it is actually cheaper for us Canadians to buy Scream Factory titles from Amazon.ca then for our American friends on Amazon.com

Here are some other current price comparisons

Body Parts $22.99 US on Amazon.com and $24.99 CAD on Amazon.ca

Let's Scare Jessica to Death $22.99 US on Amazon.com and $24.99 CAD on Amazon.ca

Here's another example Big Trouble in Little China is selling for $24.88 US on Amazon.com and $24.99 CAD on Amazon.ca

One of two possibilities: 1) It's an "unofficial" (aka bootleg) release or someone other than Paramount controls the international rights. Diabolik was selling copies but they must've sold out as soon as they put them up. I'm on their waitlist.

Regarding the Australian DVD of The Keep, I wonder if the Australian territory rights are such that there's really nothing Paramount/Mann can do to prevent a release, but, at the same time, they aren't obligated to cooperate with it (hence, the lack of an HD master).

It could be similar to what happened with the Japanese label IVC, which released several classic RKO films on Blu-Ray in Japan because the Japanese distribution rights for those titles had been sold off before Warners ever acquired the library. But Warners was under no obligation to cooperate with IVC, so the Blu-Rays were sourced from prints instead of the better elements held by WB.

Deepdiscount is selling it as well but it's on backorder

https://www.deepdiscount.com/the-keep/9337369020051

You can also purchase it from this Australian retailer

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/keep-the-1983-dvd

JB-Hi-Fi has it for $19.99AUS and they charge $12 Aussie Dollars to ship

With the US dollar it will cost you $21.56 US

There's a third possibility, which is that the assumption that Michael Mann will steadfastly block any release of this film is incorrect, or at least overstated. I'm not saying that it's equally likely, but it's a possibility for sure.

The movie stars Corey Haim and Megan Follows, it’s your patriotic duty as a Canuck to buy this movie.
