Is that based on Paramount's apparent apathy, Shout's track record or do you think Shout are seriously cutting back on product and the effort put into it? Or all three?

I don't expect every Shout/Scream release to be on the technical level of a Criterion masterpiece, but shy of a 4K for THE DEAD ZONE, I am at least hoping it will be better than their releases of CAPTAIN KRONOS and FRANKENSTEIN AND THE BLU-RAY FROM HELL.

I think that SF has to work with whatever Paramount gives them and it's up to Paramount whether or not a film receives a new scan. Films like Let's Scare Jessica to Death, The Tenant, Graveyard Shift, Silver Bullet and Danger: Diabolik didn't get new scans. However, they did allow new scans to be done for Escape From L.A., My Bloody Valentine and the first 4 Friday the 13ths. It's a toss-up, but Paramount has given SF old scans more often than they've allowed new ones to be done.

I don't think Paramount has allowed any company to release a 4K release of any of their films across the world. I do hope it gets a new scan, but who knows. It wouldn't surprise me if it's the current scan, but with a lot of special features. Still, crossing my fingers for a new scan, but don't hold your breath for a 4K release unless it's done by Paramount themselves.

I just keep hoping some of these studios will start upping their game and not be so stagnant, but then I realize it’s probably futile at this stage of declining physical media. I guess many are more interested in cashing in with the least amount of effort. I’m certainly not 4K or nothing, I still maintain and purchase DVDs which will likely never be upgraded, but I admit I lost my head dreaming of a Paramount 4K, no matter what boutique label they licensed it to. Plus how many catalog titles have made it out on 4K before a Blu release? Oh well, hope dies eternal, but truly, I was definitely smoking old hallucinogenic VHS tapes or something when I asked that question. Thanks to you and Matt for the reality check, but I still prefer my dreams!

I don't know that Paramount even has direct access to the necessary film elements from which to create new 4K masters for The Dead Zone or King Kong. Paramount has domestic distribution rights to these films, in perpetuity, but I suspect the OCNs are probably controlled by StudioCanal via Dino De Laurentiis.

So you're saying that when Scream does release The Dead Zone it will probably have the same transfer that all of the other releases have? (Which is still a good one)

Most likely considering Silver Bullet was also a Dino De Laurentiis production and their blu ray used the same master from other releases around the world. What would you give the existing master out of a 5? Could better encoding improve it even slightly?

I think encoding could help. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 and would give it a 4 if they could remove all the DNR that's on it. It's not a lot, but it's there to the point where there is a little ghosting.

On the site it has a 2.5 which the same score as Crossroads, but Crossroads is much worse.

I hope they can remove any DNR! From looking at the caps, the grain isn't very good.

Yeah, it would be great if they could remove it. Even as is, it's not horrible, but there is room for improvement with a better encode.

Didn't Paramount themselves do the new transfers for F13 1-4, My Bloody Valentine and Escape From L.A.?

Paramount does allow other companies to create new transfers, but they reportedly charge several times more (than say MGM or Universal) just for the raw scanning and basic cleanup. Paramount did the raw 4k scans for F13 1-4, My Bloody Valentine, and Pet Sematary while Shout finished them in 2k. Paramount did full 4k HDR restos for Escape From L.A. (which came out in May on BD) and Event Horizon (rescheduled for this March on BD only), both of which are native 4k HDR/DV digitally.

Yeah, but Scream has deals with both companies.

This might not be relevant. Scream Factory didn't get new scans for Silver Bullet or Orca), despite both films having similar distribution rights splits.

Despite checking out as a guest for the F13th boxset instead of logging into my account, I worried I might not be able to get those replacements discs. Before we knew of any errors I threw away the receipt too. Luckily, a quick email exchange and now my discs are on their way! Phew!*

*not like many of you care, I'm just relieved. LOL
