Titles are up at SF. Besides the stuff posted already, there's about 7,000 bundles with Vinyls and NECA figures for The Fog

I randomly pulled this from my unwatched stack last night, but it is a great film for the July 4 holiday!
![]() The world's leading atomic scientists are lured to a secretive research project at a remote mansion in Georgia. Dr. Cal Meacham and Dr. Ruth Adams, played by Rex Reason and Faith Domergue, are suspicious that their host, Exeter, played by Jeff Morrow, might have motives other than pure altruism, but even they are shocked when the purpose of their participation is finally revealed. Exeter belongs to a race of aliens who need uranium in order to defend their home planet from enemy spaceships. The 1955 sci-fi extravaganza, This Island Earth, directed by Joseph M. Newman and Jack Arnold, kicks off in a leisurely fashion, taking its time to immerse us in the lives of its lead characters. Once the scientists played by Reason and Domergue are whisked away in a flying saucer for Exeter's world, however, the proceedings are marked by a Technicolor showcase of special effects and matte paintings that is awe-inspiring even by today's standards. The planet of Metaluna, with its buildings housed underneath craters, remains a masterwork of visual splendor. Universal-International, hoping for a renewed popularity by putting their foot in the door of the sci-fi genre, brought their A game here. Rex Reason (The Creature Walks Among Us) portrays the earnest, but fun-natured sort that was a trademark of 1950s monster movie heroes. Faith Domergue, whom all of you know from Cult of the Cobra and It Came from Beneath the Sea, is an assertive heroine who takes initiative to investigate why she and others have been summoned to complete ground-breaking laboratory work. Be on the lookout for Russell Johnson, best known as the Professor from the Gilligan's Island television series, as another skeptical scientist at Exeter's mansion. This Island Earth is primarily remembered in present day for its fearsome mutant creatures with large eyes and massive exposed brains. These beings, who serve as guards on the planet of Metaluna, are outstanding examples of man-in-suit effects done right. This film was lampooned on Mystery Science Theater 3000, but I prefer it in its original version as a still-relevant meditation on the power of free will over oppression. This Scream Factory Blu-ray is a thing of beauty, with a wondrously colorful and detailed transfer and a plethora of extras. Last edited by The Great Owl; 07-04-2022 at 05:43 PM. |
