I have had an issue before with scratched discs -- I contacted them and although it took a while, they did reply and eventually shipped me a replacement disc.

This is why I not longer pre-order Titles from Shout/Scream anymore because of all the scratch problems they seem to have. I just wait for awhile then buy them and have never had any problems with scratches.

You lost me with this logic. You don't pre-order titles because of scratch issues. You order them later when they don't have scratch issues?

I agree, it doesn't make sense. If it's common that the discs are scratched on preorder titles why would it change if you order at a later date.

From my experience, my preorder titles have been scratch free so I have to wonder where he's ordering from if he's receiving so many scratched discs.

I contacted them recently because I received a few of their site-exclusive poster bundles in which the poster-tube had crushed the slipcovers of the films they were boxed with, and they took a week and a half to reply . . . so expect a lengthy delay.

They also refused to replace any of my damaged slipcovers, and passive-aggressively instructed me to only contact them from now on with instances of significant damage (yes, they bolded "significant" in their email), even though the damage was apparent in all the photos I'd provided, and one of the slipcovers was crushed so badly that it was torn.

Regarding scratched discs, I'd read in a different thread (or perhaps via their website) that they'll only replace scratched discs if the scratch is of a certain length, in inches.

They've been miserable to deal with, in my recent experience, and are adamant in taking no accountability for their substandard, endemic QC and shipping practices. I'll also be refraining from ordering direct from their webstore going forward (and would encourage others to do the same!).

Well it seems the plant is rushing to get the product to them and some discs are mishandled and get scratched. Everyone seems to complain about the scratches on new releases only and not when the title becomes an old release. Maybe reprints aren't rushed and mishandled because they don't have to meet a deadline. I haven't gotten Scream titles on release day for awhile and haven't gotten a scratched disc ever. It just seems like everytime Shout/Scream have a new release, a couple days after release the complaints start coming in.

Do you do the route insurance for like $2 when you purchase from them? If you do that, contact those people and they will replace it free.

And yes, Shout is a major pain to deal with. Oh and be careful about leaving them a bad review - I was reading on other forums how some people have been permanently banned from ordering from them after leaving bad reviews.

I've never gotten the impression from the posters here that there was any correlation between release date and chance of getting scratched discs. In my experience, I get just as many scratched discs on year(+) old releases from SF than I do on Day 1 buys of their products. Just the other day I ordered an extra copy of Halloween 4 b/c it was only 20 bucks and it was scratched to hell.

In my one experience with Route, I was impressed with the service. Within five minutes of submitting my information I had a full resolution. The representative was very professional and very fast.

Well, too late on the "not leaving a bad review" front--they solicited feedback via Trustpilot, and I obliged. Their response was predictably evasive, defensive, and wholly inadequate. I was planning on furnishing a reply to their reply, but your post has me considering otherwise (which is likely best for my psyche and corpus, both).

I did request, via an exchange with their customer service, that they cancel all of my outstanding orders, and I received a PayPal refund notification today with no accompanying correspondence from Shout!. Perhaps they've clandestinely banned me? I suppose I'll find out the next time I attempt to place an order for one of their obscenely expensive, unnecessarily limited Corman films.

I suppose wondering why they request customer feedback at all, then reacting with abject hostility toward it, would yield the same answer as wondering why they--ostensibly a boutique physical media label--exhibit no effort in safely packing their product for shipment to an exclusively collector customer base. Are they under the impression that a mainstream audience clamors for the complete series of Alf . . . on DVD?

I've only ever "purchased" the Route protection accidentally, given that, at one point, it was enabled on all orders by default (and perhaps it still is?). I'm reluctant to utilize it, out of principle: why should I be made to pay extra to receive customer service from a third party when essentially every other boutique label provides (in my experience, at least) good-if-not-stellar customer service in-house, free of charge?

Out of curiosity, what manner(s) of damage did your item(s) incur when you contacted Route?

Those are my sentiments about the whole thing, too, and on all previous orders I unchecked the box. But for some reason I went with it this one time. As for the damage incurred, SF shipped one of the last copies of a site exclusive loose in a large bubble envelope, and the case was smashed and the artwork sleeve heavily damaged inside.

It took me almost 4 weeks to get a response (I emailed them 3 times), but once I was in the queue, I got my replacement disc (Black Christmas 4K) very quickly. If you haven't yet, make sure you take pictures of the scratch(es).

Generally yes, but this confirms that there's a new transfer. And from the OCN no less!

Interesting. Was the replacement sent from Shout!, or from Route? And did they replace just the case/artwork, or did they send you a new-and-sealed replacement copy of the movie? Hopefully whatever you received as recompense was shipped better than the original, obliterated Blu-ray.

Given the extent of the damage to your item (due to Shout! packing it with reliable carelessness), I can only assume that you easily met Route's criteria for proffering a replacement, but I wonder what the claims process is like for less-egregious damage, like crushed slipcover corners?

I recently ordered Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (a 2019 blu-ray release) when Amazon had a bunch of titles on sale and it came with the same scratches I've had on newer releases. Shout replaced it for me with no problem.

I assumed that although it was an older release, they'd recently made more copies of it, and that's why it came with the (unfortunately) trademark scratches we've been seeing for the last year or two where it looks like somebody swiped the edge of the disc on concrete or something.

Also, just want to say, although I've had this issue with Shout/Scream a handful of times, I've also had it happen with a couple Kinos and Criterions, and while it totally sucks, the vast majority of my Shout/Scream purchases have been just fine. I understand people get frustrated, but I do feel like there's maybe an inordinate amount of noise about "Scratch Factory." Perhaps I've just been lucky and I should keep my trap shut, but 1) I've had to replace like six discs out of the last 200+ I've purchased (from the aforementioned companies) and 2) none of the companies have ever given me a lick of guff about it. I think they know it's an issue, and it's out of their control to fix it (apparently there are very very few disc manufacturing plants still around).

It's certainly a bummer when you're really excited to watch a new 4k, but most of my new releases are opened, checked, and then sit on my shelf for months until I'm in the mood.

Just my two cents.

Whoa, two new Japanese titles just added as Shout! Factory store exclusives

VENGEANCE FROM HELL!

37,000 peasants perished in the Shimabara Revolt; among them, the leader of that uprising, Shiro Amakusa. More than a decade later, Amakusa rises from the dead, hell-bent on revenge. Resurrecting a ghastly army of living dead master swordsmen by way of an occult art called "Makai Tensho" (demonic transmigration), he sets his sights on overthrowing the Shoganate. Standing in their way is legendary samurai Jubei Yagyu, who will have to fight the reincarnation of his own father before the fierce final confrontation with Shiro Amakusa himsel
Quote:
Kunisada is on a violent and surreal road trip as he searches for those responsible for the death of his gang boss. But with a violent temper and mouthy demeanor, he's quick to find trouble with enemies and Yakuza allies alike! Can he track down those enemies and avenge his fallen master before he's taken out by his allies?

This expertly crafted tale of criminal vengeance and underworld betrayal is a masterclass in crime filmmaking with a pulse-pounding score and a cameo by the man, Sonny Chiba!
