![]() ![]() For IBC - http://www.ibc.org/ with 4K being a BIG theme...as well as the personal purchase of a pair of diamond earrings for my better half who’ll be accompanying ![]() I’d love to do a side trip to England to take in any Premier league match in order to watch it in the ambience of a filled stadium (the singing, the shouting, etc.) for once rather than at home in front of a display but alas, not this time around. Plus, I think you still owe me a dinner and someday I plan to go north and collect. ![]() |

![]() At least you will be closer to the action on a lovely 4k setup? I wonder if the ultimate goal with sports based entertainment is for VR seats and a 'really there' experience with the Oculus or Morpheus? For my teams away games that would be awesome. It's also one of the reasons why we need advancements of course! |

A Somber view about the industry from Bill Hunt-
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/column...ts/090814_1530 Can't say i disagree with him. It seems people who were in charge of the home video market for DVD and bluray are no longer at their studios. It's all run by suits. Doesn't look good for 4KBD. He even says Sony Pictures Home Entertainment basically doesn't exist. Penton? |

I don’t consider that article to be an expression of a “somber” viewpoint, rather more like a doom and gloom rant. If you want “somber”, I’ll see if any of Charles’s comments from a 4K panel at IBC ever made it online and post a link to that for something you can listen to as more the equivalent to a “somber” viewpoint. Look, give me a half hour or so to type up a comprehensive response, as that sort of blogger grumpiness ![]() is amusing. Plus, I need some time to search for an old email correspondence which contains a link to another past article about 4K authored by Bill H. which I never commented upon before, but which I think is pertinent as it speaks to his 4K mindset as well as the lack of validity of some of his previously made 4K technical assertions and business forecasting. Meanwhile, on a more pleasantly optimistic filmic note, have you heard about Quentin’s project? I think he’s affectionately pointing at you ![]() http://www.thewrap.com/tarantinos-ha...-distributing/ Last edited by Penton-Man; 09-15-2014 at 08:20 PM. Reason: typos and spacing |

So, speaking as one of the “privileged super enthusiasts and professionals”, I’m reminded of this article Bill wrote on 4K titled “Suppose they gave us 4K HD and nobody really cared?” ….http://www.geekexchange.com/ultra-is...red-57411.html , which someone emailed me last year and not unexpectedly (for a video blogger) happens to contain more than one basic inaccuracy. Two excerpted examples being - ….”In fact, it seems as though almost every major new film is being shot in 4K these days and the final studio masters for each are completed and finished in 4K resolution. So what’s the problem? “ ^ Wrong, back in 2013 the Arri Alexa was and still remains (e.g. http://nofilmschool.com/2014/01/whic...-films-of-2014 a strong contender for both Oscar nominated and less recognized feature film acquisition, but more importantly, 4K finishing is still extremely rare - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...rs#post9694465 …”If someone pirates a Blu-ray, they’ve got a great 1K — or 1920 x 1080 — high-definition copy. If someone pirates a 4K file, they’ve essentially got a duplicate of the studio master”… ^ Wrong, without getting deeply into discussing DPX files and subsequent mezzanine codec levels, there is much more to the “studio master” than just consumer compressed pixel count (4K) deliverables, e.g. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...er#post9642155 And elsewhere in our Blu-ray Tech Forum, I read on another thread where a member was defending Bill’s most recent editorial opinion saying that Bill “is excited about 4K and he wants it to be a success.” Well, considering the tone and content of both articles together, my impression is the same I get from a couple of my neighbors who are currently going through marriage counseling where one is promoting the positives in their marriage and thinking of ways to improve it in their meetings with the counselor; whereas the other spouse (I’m told) is always whining about the negatives and problems they’re having. Now, guess which spouse reminds me of Bill’s editorial position on 4K and in particular, 4KBD. I’ll bet you one thing though, when a 4K Blu-ray Science Fiction movie hits the shelves, after Bill giving a perfunctory comment on how 4KBD is a niche format…and/or won’t last long…and the 4K upgrade for that particular science fiction flick being a mild but noticeable improvement and therefore may be worthwhile for true fans of that film (you know the qualified spiel) - - sure as heck once he’s finished with the qualifiers, he’ll be working it hard for sales through his website as well as in lead-ups to the actual review...despite what he sees and emphasizes in editorials as inherent problems with the 4K BD format in general. All that said for perspective, moving on to your direct concerns about the future success of the 4K BD business model and movies on physical media in general (no matter the resolution) based on current allocation of resources and in house *skilled* personnel (or lack thereof, in some blogger’s opinion) – if you speak with top power wielders in the industry, i.e. those to whom the Home Entertainment division Presidents report to (e.g., for Sony Pictures - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...-studio-731829 , I would say the consensus is that due to such factors as streaming movies, the widespread use of the internet, smart cell phones, etc….all those alternative entertainment choices have stolen peoples’ time away from that which used to be spent watching certain movies over and over again on physical media, i.e. discs. They envision the role of disc platforms to be in a slow decline until a new steady state equilibrium settles out in the digital age while there is more growth potential in non-physical media forms of delivery; however, and importantly to Blu-ray fans, that does not mean that discs are not a viable revenue stream for content producers as well as consumer electronics companies alike….and for years to come. ![]() If stakeholders thought differently, the task force for 4K BD would have been dissolved months ago as the developers have a hell of a lot of other things on their plates to tend to with their respective companies. The 4K Blu-ray upgrade should appeal to videophiles and movie enthusiasts (be it as early 4K adopters or just those replacing their TVs on the normal replacement cycle) and 4K BD hopefully should play a limited (albeit modest) role in the overall success of UHD ![]() Anyway, if one is looking to blame someone regarding how vigorous the Hollywood studio attention is to physical media, or how robust the future 4KBD launch and longevity will be, and one finds them both wanting by their own personal analysis…I wouldn’t assign the lion share of the blame to the ‘suits’, but rather, blame your fellow consumers for their choices of alternative viewing methods and media. |

I've likewise never understood this argument. This situation already exists. People seem to forget that for the better part of the last decade, the resolution of Digital Cinema was approximately the same as Bluray. The 2K DCP might have superior color-space and compression -- but with respect to resolution, we've had theater-quality content in our homes for many years. I have a weekend of Prem league matches to catch up on (including your Sunderland boys vs. Spurs), plus today’s Arsenal competition in the Champions League, so please no hints. Also looking to see if Scotland stays or leaves the U.K. Interesting situation over there across the pond. |
