Well, I'm 100% Japanese, but of course that doesn't make me an expert in Japanese (the language). Growing up in Japan until around 25 (at which time I moved to California) probably does.

To all of those that are still reading, I think we just made a point beyond any reasonable doubt that we Japanese can't even agree on what to call our own country's name.

This thread will definitely get a lot more hits throughout the next hours up until the anouncement is rumored to happen.

Is this how they felt December 18th 1918 at around 8 in the morning? Could it be true? Could it be blu?
Yeah, and most of the replies in the last 20 pages or so have nothing to do with the original topic. We're all just hanging around killing time.

In case Dave took his eyes off his watch, there are 6 hours and 34 minutes left.

You're making this up, aren't you? That name's just too damn funny for Japanese engineers (who are generally entirely too serious for their own good) to dream up.

I would rather be sitting on the beach in surfers now, rather than stuck here in Geelong...although if Geelong wins the Grand Final this weekend may be more interesting...

I am surprised this hasn't been locked. It should be till an official announcement comes out. All of us are just going round in circles and loops.

Well, I figured the count would be in quadruple digits by the time next looked, but 1250 was the number I'd pegged for the over/under. I took the over, so I've lost a bet with...myself. Guess I owe me a shiny new BD.

Thanks for the warm reception .

It's so much nicer around here that I think I might abandon the AVS forums as a celabratory move if this rumor turns out true .

I can't jump to any conclusions...but I can't help but ask that if Warner were to support Blu-ray exculsively with HD-DVD no longer being the lowest common denominator of the two, do you think they will finally crank up the bit-rate on their encodes and have releases that virtually free of:

banding (happy feet) / softness (Batman Begins) / Inconsistency (Blood Diamond)...etc.?

To me that it is the single most exciting prospect, and (IMO) the most beneficial to both Warner's compressionists for having "more room to breathe", and to consumers for having a more quality product.

I know I'm not alone on this .

I remember getting into this discussion with someone working a graveyard shift a few weeks ago. Yes, on this forum.

Why do people always ask the same questions? I mean, can't you think of some other things Japanese can do? (Yeah yeah, like not agree on the next gen optical format. Hey, I'm still on topic! )

don't get your hopes up high.
although it is rumoured that they will honour HD DVD commitment, this does feel strange.

Yes, there was a post a few days ago from an insider who said something like they are hoping Warner would start doing BD-optimized encodes sometime in the near future. (Note the "hoping" part, it was not a definite answer that they will.)

I don't want to post a link here, please go read the Insider's Thread if you are interested. I've been thinking about that comment since this rumor broke out. Coincidence? Maybe. But one can hope.

I can't believe you made me go read that. I have a headache now. They are claiming 720p/1080i is equivalent to 1080p again. Are these people's skulls so thick nothing can get through?!?

Short explanation on why 1080p is better than 1080i

As for the news itself, I don't think it means much. Universal Music Group has been part of BDA for a long time, and see how much good that did for getting Universal Pictures to this side.
