not exactly, 日本 means the base of sun, as 日 means the sun or day, and 本 means the base or Origin, so in the old old time when Japan just changed the name from Woguo (倭國) to Nippon (日本), literally meaning "Origin of the Sun". In True Meaning of Shiji (史記正義), it says Wu Zetian (武则天) ordered a Japanese envoy to change the name to Nippon. God how powerful China used to be eh... |

again there is a guideline, there are things u cannot change, u have to say Nihon Jin, not Nippon Jin, as I said Niho is more like a adj. and why r u arguing with a Nihon Jin about his own language? |

of cosure i know that, the reason is becuz Nihon is older than Nippon, just like Kyoto to Tokyo, so when we say Nippon bashi it means the one in Osaka, and when we say Nihon bashi it means the one in Tokyo surrounding oldest and largest commercial districts of the city. |

![]() Seriously, both nihon-jin and nippon-jin are acceptable. Go look up ja.wikipedia.org or a Japanese dictionary of your choice. For your information, my Sanseido dictionary lists 日本人 only under "nippon-". But that's just the example they picked, doesn't mean they disapprove of "nihon-jin". Some things have to be one way or the other (I've never heard Nippon-bashi in Osaka pronounced Nihon-bashi), some things can be either (Nihon-bashi in Tokyo has been pronounced Nippon-bashi on occasion, in particular the "Oedo Nippon-bashi" song). That's all I'm saying. enjoy gandalf ![]() Last edited by gand41f; 09-27-2007 at 10:08 AM. |

has a bridge that had to be made wider to accomodate ever increasing traffic...
A group of Japanese engineers designed a means of 'bolting on' an extra couple of lanes to the exisitng construction. It's name? The "Nippon Clip-on". |

Holy Blu Cow! The replies to this thread has been growing like bacteria while I got my beauty-sleep
![]() This thread will definitely get a lot more hits throughout the next hours up until the anouncement is rumored to happen. Is this how they felt December 18th 1918 at around 8 in the morning? Could it be true? Could it be blu? |

"Oedo Nihon-bashi" doesn't sound right, because you need to actually sing it like "Oedo Niihon-bashi" (notice the extra "i") so someone just decided to change it to "Nippon-bashi" even though in 99% of other places, the one in Tokyo is pronounced "Nihon-bashi". enjoy gandalf ![]() |
