On the other hand, ST2084 is displayed-referred, which means the HDR content is fitted to a display.

To convert from ST2084 to ACES involves several transforms, so essentially it’s an indirect connection. But the advantage (with ACES) is that you have more of a display independence, in other words, your (the studio’s) ACES master is not bound to any of the output systems or devices. You have all the dynamic range you could desire in ACES and you may actually end up going down in dynamic range with viewing the content on your HDR tv as compared to that of what ACES is capable of.

Each thing (ACES and HDR) is different and has its own advantages. So, the thinking (esp. amongst color scientists and developers, not marketing folk) is that in the future, HDR and ACES might become complementary, working in tandem if you will. A cutting edge goal/concept being thrown around in peoples’ minds is that it would be beneficial if you could use the HDR workflow as a way to edit ACES (which is not exactly how the current ACES model works). So, in other words, edit the ACES content in HDR space and then covert it back to ACES (losslessly)….but that’s bits-dependent and a topic for yet another day as the bell tolls at 10:00 A.M.
I'll follow-up on the 'bit-dependent' concept later when I have more time because it's a complex topic and trying to explain it as simply as possible can be difficult.

I don't like thread crapping. People should not go into a thread just to say that they don't like something. In fact, until now, I've never posted in this thread.

But Geezuz H...!

I'd be embarrassed to have most of these titles in my house for drink coasters. I wouldn't pay a nickel for any of them. I might grudgingly accept one or two as gifts just to be polite...before donating them to the Salvation Army thrift store.

And the dates for all this stuff is still as mushy as the Halloween pumpkins in my compost pile. "Early 2016" for the movies...but they are still reporting this, "... Ultra HD Blu-Ray player (expected to roll out later this year from multiple consumer electronics manufacturers)... And that article is dated today: November 10. What constitutes "later this year" when you are almost half way through the 11th month of 2015?

Well, there are 3 major camps. Firstly, those who’ve been favoring the PQ system. Secondly, those who favor the hybrid log-gamma curve. And last but not least, Thirdly, those who believe what the consumer needs is both approaches (PQ system and HLG) with the former for non-real time production (e.g. movies) and the later for live programming (i.e. a single standard with two applications perhaps by combining the signal path vis-a-vis an OOTF).

It should be noted that the PQ advocates and the HLG advocates each believe their respective system is the only one consumers would ever require….which has led to some delay of a single standard to define image dynamic range to add to what Rec.2020 gave to UHD.

These crap movie releases are not making me want to go out and buy a 4K player. Not at all. I cannot help but think back to how 'The Matrix' helped launch DVD in a BIG way. Maybe they should be trying to get some 4k releases of movies that still are not on Blu Ray to coincide with the player launch?

Wouldn't it be easier to launch UHD with titles such as 'True Lies' and 'The Abyss', rather than than 'Smurfs 2' and 'Pineapple Express'?
