I think there's a very big difference on prices of movies in different contries.
It looks like the price in US are lower initially but then stays almost the same. In Denmark (where I live) a new DVD normally costs 199 dkr (~ 33 US$). Special releases are even more expensive. I have Lord of the Rings 1, 2 and 3 in extended version. Each 4 DVD set was 499 dkr (~ 83 US$). But also you can buy budget movies. Today I am going to pick up "Shawhanks redemtion". It will cost me just 25 dkr (little more than 4 US$) Disneys original animated movies have been one of the exceptions to the falling of prices. But recently even they are selling the movies for a lower price eventually. |

I realize they have to make their money too, but they will charge as much as they can. It's like buying printer ink. Probably cheaper to keep buying new printers with starter cartridges than refill the thing.
When movies first came out on LaserDisc, they were like $80 a pop in the late 70's! They slowly came down in price on VHS. My first VHS movie was TRON for like 35 bucks in 1986. In 2002 my brother owed me 20 bucks, but bought me the 20th Anniversary Edition of TRON with the money instead. Same movie, widescreen, better picture, better sound, value added content, and 16 years later for LESS. Even considering the decline in prices, we still get raked over the coals on these things. Mass manufacturing of movie DVD's are not burned, they are pressed! They churn out like butter for WELL UNDER A BUCK. The packaging costs more than the dvd in some cases. They charge what they feel the movie buying market will bare. They want that sweet spot where people don't go, "that's it...I'm getting a pirate copy." |
