It is widely reported over the net that the PS3 has an audio problem creating a hissing or humming sound (search ps3 hiss problem) from all channels in a surround system set up at louder volumes when set to LPCM. By the way just like with everyone else on the net this is the only component connected to the receiver that has this issue. Obviously the problem has not been fixed because the older posts are from 2007 and it's 2009, and I've had my PS3 since launch and still hear the hiss which by the way if you have even semi decent speakers you can hear. It has nothing to do with receiver issues, amp power, lower watts, under powered speakers, crossed lines, dirty power or AC issues, the internal PS3 volume setting, the HDMI cable being used including what version is being used(which is 1.3 by the way), or lastly optical problems. It is simply the PS3 has either a cheaper quality audio processor or, Sony is not aware of the issue, but I cant see how that is considering the problems been reported for the last 2 years, so it increasingly looks like it's the hardware. Well unless someone has any non noob suggestions it looks like the PS3 will be used for a video game console and only that because it's run as a blu-ray player seems to have expired, especially when sound has become increasingly more important to me, and this hiss is too annoying, I think it's time to buy another stand alone (LG BD-390 here I come). Again if anyone has any idea or suggestion feel free to give me a hint, but please no suggestions that have to do with what I've listed because it is none of those problems, trust me all of these issues have been tested many times by myself and others...

You be speaking for yourself. I have great speakers and have the volume cranked all of the time. No hiss to be found on my end.
And, obviously it ain't that big a problem. Otherwise, these threads would have been lit up ages ago! |

I too have a PS3 audio issue. It's not a hiss though. More of a low, light buzz. I don't hear it when playing a movie unless the movie is in mono, but that's another thing all together. The only time the buzz is always present is at the XMB screen. I've tried using a 3-to-2 prong adapter but that didn't solve the problem. I do not get a buzz from cable programming, only through the PS3 and only on the XMB.

Yeah I do not have a hum just a hiss at high volumes and this is the only component connected to the receiver with this issue I was thinking it was the speakers until I researched it, might be a launch date ps3 issue I font know. By the way to the above poster most people do not hear it because they have it connected to a tv and no speaker connection...or think it's normal speaker hiss but it's not...

For a true hiss issue (not a hum) one possible reason is many PS3 owners have found that with the PS3's volume set to its default position they have to turn up the volume on their audio system (e.g., AVR) to order to get equal sound volume to their other AV sources. When you do turn up to the volume on the AVR then it will be introducing more hiss at the speaker output. The amount of hiss will vary between AVRs, generally depending on the quality of the AVRs digital-to-analog converters and the analog amplifier stages. Your current Sony STR-DG910 is considered an entry-level AVR and probably is not especially good in terms of noise level. You can try setting the PS3's output volume a little higher than the default, but you must be careful in using the PS3's setting to increase its output volume level since setting it too high can result in clipping of the audio peaks on some BDs. I have two PS3s each connected to a Denon AVR (2800 series and 4800 series) and have no hiss issues with either.
