Default Glad they don't make MPEG2 Transfers anymore. because some scenes look bad

I think MPEG2 transfers looks really poor. Other scenes quite good but there is also scenes in a MPEG2 release that looks really bad.

Does anyone agree with this also?

I think it just depends on the how well the studio handled the transfer. Some mpeg-2 blu-rays look amazing. Just look at Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven. Both have beautiful PQ.

I would throw in The Covenant, The Devil Wears Prada, and Invincible. But overall, I think that mpeg2's were not efficient and AVC and VC-1 are better codecs for blu-ray.

Idiotic by the studios to still release some movies in MPEG2. When they know VC-1 and AVC gives the best transfer

VC-1 and AVC are more efficient (same quality at a smaller size) but do not necessarily look any better than a high bit rate MPEG2.

While this is certainly no excuse, the MPEG-2 encode is likely due to this being mastered and planned for release several years ago. Fox/MGM had a number of titles ready for release back in the early days (MPEG-2 days) but went on a sort of hiatus. I believe they were waiting for BD+ (the Blu-ray security stuff).

When they finally did release the titles from that period, they didn't go back and re-do them. They left them as MPEG-2 and generally not of great quality.

Black Mask is an MPEG2 transfer. I thought it looked pretty good considering its a film from 1996.

What is that supposed to mean - as if movies from 1996 are old, all of the sudden?

DeadDog a few posts above this made two very excellent exceptions to your case (Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven), although MPEG-2 is generally more associated with lower visual quality. You can certainly have a high-quality encode with MPEG-2, though. It's just that VC-1 and AVC (MPEG-4) options have come along.

Rollerball was recently released on Blu-ray as an MPEG-2 disc on June 2nd. Not sure if it was released in HD-DVD before BD and the transfer "ported" over. The review was posted today, and its PQ didn't fare well.

So do studios really still do MPEG2 transfers(Rollerball). That is just beyond stupid. Why would they even do that if VC-1 and AVC is the best is the best for superior transfers now?
