Default Steve Vai- First BD release in 720p?!?

Yes I'm a fan. Yes it will be in my collection. But, a Blu with only 720p? Can that even be considered a real BD? I've not seen a BD with 720p, has anyone else? What's to be expected with PQ? I'm a bit surprised by the Vai camp on this one. Especially coming after the stellar release from Iron Maiden. Maybe it was a typo, but part of the appeal of Blu-ray is getting that 1080p experience. Not sure what company is behind this release, other than Vai's own Favored Nations, but at least Eagle Rock Entertainment gives you 1080i, if not 1080p! This makes me a little nervous as to the quality. Feel free to calm me down.

Many live concerts are released in 720p (eg: the new tenacious D blu). I'm not sure why, but it could be a result of the cameras used etc.

You do understand the whole 720p 1080i thing right?
But yeah it all comes down to how it was filmed, and while more concert blus are hitting in at 1080p now many do not.

The decision to film the concert with 720p cameras was probably because it's cheaper than using 1080i or even 1080p digital cameras. Steve Vai isn't exactly the most popular musician on the planet and this Blu-Ray won't sell that many copies because instrumental guitar acrobatics aren't everyone's cup a tea. Vai is in a completely different league compared to Iron Maiden or Rush.

Personally I'm glad that there will be a Blu-Ray release, even it is 720p. It's still HD.

Agreed. They shot it in HD and are releasing it in HD, so it's fine in my book.

Would it have been nice to have it in 1080p? Sure, but if this is the format it was shot in, you can't really fault them for releasing it that way on home video.

1080i is twice the resolution of 720p
