Haha, I thought the same thing last night but didn't want to say anything as I have corrected pro-B in the past, didn't want to sound like the spelling police

Is you spot something, PMs are always welcome . I upload so much information (have to translate as well), often late at night, that every once in awhile I might hit the wrong letter on my keyboard.

It seems to be OOP so you won't find it reasonable pretty much anywhere, unfortunately.

Aaah ok, that's unfortunate. Thanks for the info, though.

Such a shame to find that the HD version on iTunes - which I bought because there's no way to get the Blu-ray any more - has burned-in giant white subtitles that are a third of the height of the 'scope frame, even though there's a subtitle stream encoded in the video they could've used instead.

Ah well, it's the best we're going to get for now.

Could you possibly share a screen shot/cap of the subtitles? I love this film & if the iTunes version is the only one I can easily buy, i'll do it. However, I'd like to see just how bad it is. I hate the fact that the usually beautiful cinematography is being obscured.

well, i went ahead & purchased this just the other day. it was on sale for only $5. it looks a great deal better than the dvd i had, but it has NO extras. very disappointing. however, i know that an Amelie 4K version is coming to disc this year, so maybe they'll consider this film next . . .

Has there been any announcement of this?

There was a big announcement of Sony Classics licensing the film for the US market, with a limited theatrical re-release set for next week (2/14).

Miramax's 20 year US license recently expired, that's why Sony was able to pick up the film.

However, unless I missed it, none of the announcements from Sony said anything about a remastering of the film.

I'd love a UHD for Amelie, but it was one of the first movies finished as a 2K DI, because of the radically stylized color timing. They can't just remaster it from the negative, there isn't one.

They'd need to do one of three things:
- upscale the 2K DI (if it still exists in a format that can be read by modern systems, which is unlikely)
- Do a 4K scan of the 35mm filmout of the 2K DI, like they did for The Prince of Egypt
- rebuild the film entirely, from scratch, like they did recently for The Pianist

I would think they'd have announced it if they did one of those.

No 4K for Amelie, sadly. Confirmed by Jeunet himself:

"The 2K is enough, 4K is just bullsh*t. You know, 4K is an invention from the TV sellers. Sometimes it looks too much video, it's too much electric. When I go in the store with a lot of TV screen, I throw up. It's disgusting.

It sounds, sadly, like Jeunet has only seen 4K TVs with motion smoothing and it turned him against the whole format. I've seen that with other people too. The interviewer does try to call Jeunet on this, very politely, but Jeunet has gone on to talking about another topic and doesn't hear him say this.

well, this is incredibly disappointing. not only that there won't be a 4K version of this beautiful film, but that a director with such a vision doesn't seem to appreciate how it could look.

it also worries me that he is likely mistaking motion smoothing (or whatever it's called for that particular brand) for a "video look". i agree that it absolutely makes the image look like shit, but as accomplished as he is, he's wrong here.

bummer.

What's the story behind why this movie hasn't been available in the US for ages, and no BD? There's a page for a US release, but no UPC and no details to even show it ever existed.

It's streaming on Amazon US right now from Warners, and they financed it, so I don't think they'll ever lose the rights.

Presumably, they just don't think it's worth the effort to bother releasing on BD here, sadly.

It is flipping insane that this isn't on 4k, let alone not on BR. I cannot use the expletives I want to, but to quote The Fantastic Mr. Fox, the cuss you say.

Need to re-watch my french bluray asap! From what I remember, this movie makes a great companion piece to the new remake of "All Quiet on the Western front" on Netflix...

4k HDR ASAP. Kino, Arrow … someone. I watched this film in 2009 and would love to rewatch it on my 4k TV in HDR. One can only dream!
