Default Top Gun

Ok I know this is going to sound like a stupid question but I just got through watching TOP GUN for the first time and the ending left me confused as to what just happened kind of thing. Spoiler tags going up in case someone ventures into this thread and hasn't seen it yet.

[Show spoiler]I don't under why exactly Tom Cruise became a huge hero by only doing one quick mission. I mean he drops out of TOP GUN but comes back, shouldn't he have been kicked out for good with a dishonorable discharge? Idk, I'm just mainly confused as to how he goes out to sea and within a few hours is attacking six jets so quickly and comes back being a huge hero. Why did they need TOP GUN pilots to do the mission? Why not just use the normal pilots that stay on the air craft carrier? Also why would there even be 6 planes trying to attack the carrier?

I'm just confused and I know I'm reading way too much into this but I can't help it, just the way my mind thinks.

It's in the movie:

"No one's been up against a MiG28 before."

They needed super pilots, because in that movie's chain of reality, the MiG28 was faster, way more maneuverable and totally unknown.

that makes a little more sense, now I wonder how his relationship is going to continue when Charlie moves to DC for her job.

you'd probably end with some serious headaches trying to dissect an '80s action flick.

I've heard rumors of a sequel to Top Gun where Maverick goes back to be a teacher at the academy and has to deal with a rookie female pilot.
