Default A question about PS3 slim and bitstreaming...

I just picked up a slim yesterday, I haven't yet set it to bitstream. I've got it connected to my Onkyo 606. Will there be a improvement to the sound quality, or is it just going to display the audio codec on the front of my receiver?

bitstream or not, sound quality will be the same

just a matter of whether you let the PS3 do the decoding or your receiver...you paid for the features of the receiver, might as well see the pretty light too

Depends, DACS could make it sound different. You may expect a $1500 Receiver does a better job at decoding the signal than a $300 PS3

The DAC's never come into play when decoding an audio signal over HDMI... DAC stands for Digital (to) Analog Converter meaning that they only convert the digital signal to analog right before it hits the amplifier. When TrueHD or DTS-MA gets decoded, it is still digital, it's just been converted to the uncompressed PCM format.

If you use a player with analog outputs, then you will use the DAC converters, but the PS3 slim doesn't even have analog outputs so this user will not hear any difference either way. I'd prefer to have the DTS-MA and TrueHD lights come on at my reciever though

I always thought when a Receiver did the decoding, the signal had turned into analog instead of digital.
