Default Old Magnavox 37 inch 720P/1080i

Sorry for the double post, but for whatever reason my old thread wasn't showing up..

Here is my TV http://Magnavox 37MF231D 37-Inch Widescreen LCD HDTV with HDMI

With it being an older set and only 37 inches, is it honestly worth it to go Blu? I hear many people say that unless you have a 42"+ TV it's not worth it. Also i do not have a surround sound reveiver, so i would be relying on my TV for sound...would an HDMI cable allow me to get sound from my TV speakers?

Size isn't an issue by itself- it's viewing distance + size. The further you sit from your display, the bigger the display must be to properly get a benefit from 720/1080p material. There is no reason that you would not gain in going to blu-ray from that TV, unless you sit quite far away.

How far do you sit?

Also, regarding sound quality- that's a bit of a different kettle of fish. You will gain some fidelity vs. DVD's but the difference may be negligible on TV speakers. In order to truly enjoy the benefits of blu-ray, honestly you really need SOME kind of home theater setup in my opinion. Audio is one of the biggest improvements vs. DVD.

Finally, do you have any HD channels now via cable/satellite? How do they look? BD is going to look at least as good if not sharply better.

also, HDMI will be your best (others can equal it however for 720p) option, and easiest since it'll be audio/video in one cable.

About 10 feet away. And i can notice a difference between my HD cable channels and non HD, not a HUGE difference but i do notice it.

And i know Audio is important for Blu, but i just don't have the money right now to spend 400+ on a surround sound receiver...so TV speakers will have to do for now.

blu-ray via HDMI should at least give the picture quality of HD channel. If the TV has the potential, blu-ray quality could be better than the HD channel.

Well i'm also just using component cables for my HD cable.

So it may look even better...DAMMIT! I can't decide!

In that case most likely you would see a notable improvement. If you start collecting now, you would build up a good library for rewatching once you upgrade the TV at a future date.
