Default Why are Denon universal flagship players so cheap?

I just won the 5900 for 250.00.. This player was 2,000 in 04.. I know Blu Ray is the new king of PQ, but the 5900/5910/3930ci offers many technical strengths for up converting standard standard DVD.. The Build quality. Functionality.. & I'd like to see a better 250 CD/SACD/HDCD player.. I highly doubt Oppo has a better analog section then the 5900.. I bought it more for 2 channel analog then movie watching.. & too be used as a transport with my heavily modded Bel Canto DAC 2. I will be using my vintage DT48 as 'speakers' so BM isn't a biggie. I still have a PS3 for HD.. I just can't believe how 'obsolete' flagship players get once new technology is released.

Hi,

In my case... I use HDMI output of my PS3 to my AVR and projector... And, I'm a bits is bits type so lots of stuff like that gizmo you just bought is obsolete.

I hardly watch any DVDs anymore so I'm not interested in the "best" DVD player.

Anyway,... I'm glad you got something you like and I wish you luck with it.

Edit- I would also think the Oppo Blu Ray player being similar and adding Blu Ray playback and coming it under $500 is also making a dent in the resale value of the unit you mentioned.

-Brian

If it is any consolation, the new Denon DVD-A1UDCI Universal (CD, DVD, SACD/DVD-A, BD) player is listed for $4,500.00. The most recent issue of the Home Theater Magazine had a raving review of it. I have no doubt that it is a great player, but I would rather buy the new Oppo BDP-83 universal player for $499 and spend the rest of the $4,000 on other things. Marginal improvement in sound or picture is not worth $4,000.

BD,
HomeTheaterMag didn't exactly rave about the overall speed of the new Denon, which it found to be decidedly slow considering the price for the unit. It's clearly a luxury item built for a narrow segment of the overall market.

True, but they raved about the sound and picture. When you are watching a 2-hour movie, who cares about a few seconds of delay?

I agree, I am sick of hearing people debate speed of players now, they are at most going to wait 30 extra seconds.

So true. It sure as hell beats watching the tosh that comes on before some flicks at the cinema, while you have to wait for the main feature to start showing.

Though in all fairness, the old adverts for the local Indian restaurant in Streatham used to be amusing, after hearing the Pearl & Dean music.
