GO HUSKERS.
Default Buying a tv that needs a bulb replaced.

I posted a reply in a different thread that got me thinking. So i decided to make a post about it.

Why is buying a tv that needs a bulb crazy in this day and age? Its even to the point of a deal breaker for some people to purchase a tv that needs a bulb.

So i thought of some comparisons that you would not even think 2 seconds about.

You want to save money and buy a used car instead of an new one. Chances are that you will have to put some maintenance in it sooner than if you purchased a new car.

You buy a gaming console. You then have to constantly buy new games and accessories to change with the times.

A personal computer. You will buy a new computer knowing that in a few years it will be slow and out of date.

Or even a cel phone. People spend hundreds on cel phones knowing that in 6 months a newer phone that they will have to have will be released.

So my point is. Say you buy a dlp that is hundreds of dollars cheaper than a plasma or lcd. You paid less money for the dlp, with a bigger screen, knowing that you would have to replace a bulb.

So why does buying a bulb for a tv and crazier than getting a new phone every year? Or putting a new hard drive and upgrading your ram in your personal pc? Or putting on a set of new tires on a used car that you knew was going to need tires soon?

its not that i dont think. probably size of the set that makes it unappreciated. everyone relates big to old. and thin to new. or atleast the general public.

Wow i figured all the DLP haters would come down on me with great wrath.

Sooo either im proving a valid point or no one feels like they have a stronger argument to the contrary.

i think "bulb" replacement in the past was a big issue. bulbs were expensive and they were intergrated into the systems in such a way that most needed a service tech to come out a replace the bulb. So not only do you pay for an expensive bulb you pay for the service guy. Then the newer models had a better design where the bulb unit is modular. 1 or 2 screws and you slide the unit out and replace the bulb yourself which most people are capable of doing. I personally went with an LED DLP so i wouldn't have to replace a bulb evry couple years. Also as units get older the bulbs become hard and harder to find and also drives the cost up.

other than worrying about the future bulb availablilty, my primary concern would be the condition of the actual tv, will it work after bulb is replace, did the bulb go out do to just usage, etc. I don't mind buying used but I always sense a red flag when the item is not 100% funtional...

I find DLP a major improvement over conventional CRT projection, but I just dont feel the performance matches that of a plasma.

As you can see by my equipment, I own a 60" 1080p which requires the replacement of a bulb and it's easy and I've already changed it once! Doesn't bother me a bit that I don't own a plasma or lcd; to each their own IMHO. And I LOVE how my picture looks so I'm a HAPPY CAMPER!

Just figured someone would have had something to say about it.

Yes i am a fan of DLP. Do i own a plasma and lcd tv as well. Yes. I guess i figured that i could get some intelligent discussion going about what seems to be one of the most commented "downfalls" of DLP on this message board.

Then i get "Happy?" back

LOL!! No, as you can see in my sig i'm the proud owner of a very fine DLP. I just knew that a certain member would chime in with his hate. Look in the display forum under DLP. There's a thread called "why do some think dlp is a dead tech?" There's plenty of discussion and thread crapping going on there.

Ok, i'll play along. Even as a proud owner i have a few small gripes, but since my LED was the last gen that samsung released, my gripes might be different from others.

1) is the silk screen effect. It's not a deal breaker and i've been able to "tame" it by calibration, but on very bright whites it does show itself now and again.
2) people complain about geometry on these sets and with a grid up on the screen it is a bit off in one corner, but when i'm watching tv it can't be noticed on 99.9% of the material so it's a non-factor to me. Others over at avsforum seem to be obsessed with this idea, but if you never put the grid up you'd probably never notice.

LOL!! honestly that's my only gripe. I do notice a difference in brightness with the vertical viewing angle, but seated it's perfect and since i don't watch tv standing up it's no big deal. If i am standing up, i'm probably 20' away in the kitchen and from back there it looks great.
Mine turns on fast, it's under 12" thin, it's light, it uses hardly any power, the horizontal viewing angles are superb, the picture is great, and for $999 i got a 61" 1080p tv.
What a country!!

Sorry guess i dont usually click on the profiles very much.

My bad

Sarcasm is soooo hard to determine here in black and white text

When i went to school for electronic repair and learned how dlp actually worked i was sold.

I do like the other technologies but im a big bang for your buck guy.

Im just disappointed that i purchased mine when i did. 3 months after i bought mine the LEDs were the same price i paid. Oh well thats how it happens i guess.
