Default sony s550 stopped working

I have a Sony S550 connected to samsung lcd tv via HDMI cable and optical cable to surround sound system. i have played just 3 dvd's and all working fine, i played my first blueray disc, 'angels and demons' and half way through the film the screen froze, sound disappeared but the counter continued.
i stopped the play and tried to select the last chapter we were watching but it froze again, tried unplugging and resetting to factory but no joy, getting anxious now. tried again but display now shows 'no disc' tried a dvd, again 'no disc'.
what has gone wrong, three and a half films and it is bust, can anyone help.

Barry

This was the fist Blu-ray you tried...ever? Is your firmware up-to-date?

Sounds like a brand new player - only 3 DVDs and 1 BD played so far. Indeed, it looks as though a firmware update is needed.

Click this link to download the firmware update for the Sony BDP-S550:

that is the one and only update they have issued for this unit. It was for a few small corrections in the BD-live aspects of the player but nothing major. I have had one of these units for over a year (with the update) without a single problem. Sounds to me that it may just be a defective player.

Yes this was the first blueray disc to be played but it did get half way through.

The player was bought in August 09, i assume the firmware is up to date as this won't be old stock i couldn't buy one last january all were out of stock after the xmas period.

It may be a duff player but i bought this model after research showed it to be one of the best, just unlucky i guess. Anyway i have taken it to a sony repair shop today under guarantee, i will let you know what happens.

Maybe i will find out what happens at the end of Angels and Demons also.

Sounds like a loose connection between the laser read head (both blue and red lasers) to the processing unit. I say this because the timer still works - meaning it is still picking up the sync signal - but video is not being transmitted. Since this is a new unit, my recommendation would be to return it and replace the "duff" unit.

My $0.02...
