Should I hold out for an LED LCD TV?

After my last thread became a fight between Vizio fans and non fans, I wanted to get to my point. Im looking to get an 1080p tv. My current is a 42in 720p plasma. I had settled on an Phillips 42in, but wouldnt mind a 46in since my tv stand will handle it.

So seeing a LED tv, at $2000, and my regular LCD tv at $650, should I put off buying a new tv until LEDs are cheaper, or just pick up the phillips in a few weeks? Am I gonna buy the LCD now and then want an LED later?

Doesnt anyone out there have one??

Sharp LED TV has falling price a lot, 6ave carry the 52" sharp 120hz LED TV for only around $1600. I saw in sams club, the picture is very bright and vivid, but is no way as slim as those Samsung LED TV, the size is about some LCD TV. Just wait till black friday for majority of tv price drop.

Personally, i wouldn't "upgrade" from a 42" plasma to a 46" lcd. I think the size difference will be negligible, I think you probably have a better picture with the plasma than you’d get with the LCD, so the only reason to get an LED is if it’s going to be a lot better picture, and at under 50” 1080p isn’t going to do much, so the LED better look a heck of a lot better than plasma….IMHO.

no, you should upgrade to a better plasma. Thats a real upgrade. Going to an LED LCD would merely be a swap at best.

Yeah you are absolutely right, LED LCD is not much of an upgrade.

Amen to that, keep your plasma! Forget about LED for now, it will take a few years to refine!

Sorry but I have to disagree with this. First off a 46" screen will be 4" wider & 2" taller than a 42" TV. In a smaller room that can have a huge impact. Also, the OP says he has a Phillips Plasma. It would be one thing if he had a Kuro 42" 768p, but any Phillips can be beaten by a great LCD TV. I have a Pioneer Pro-950HD Kuro that is 768p and some of the newer LCD tv's that are 1080p are challenging it's quality. The new Sony XBR9's the Samsung 950, 8500 & 7000 and the older Sony XBR8 all have great picture quality and certainly will out perform a Phillips plasma that is 768p and will give a much more satisfying movie experience. I have the older A650 Samsung as well as the XBR9 and in the right environment can be as impressive or better than my Pio 768p plasma.

Totally agree! I went from a 42 inch LCD projection to a 46 inch XBR8 and there is a huge difference. I sit 8 or so feet away and I feel anything much larger would start to defeat the purpose. A lot of so -called HD feeds leave a lot to be desired. If all I watched was blu-ray the sky, or my wallet, would be the limit regarding size.

Actually 3.2" wider, and 2.4" taller if my math is correct......

Well, you would obviously want the better TV later for the same price. I have a 46" Sammy LED and I would recommend it to anyone. It all depends if you are willing to wait quite some time and if you are continuing to save money while you are waiting, which in both cases you could get the same LED or a better one (if you continue saving) later . If you would like a better TV now, don't want to wait and can't save more money (like me ), get the Phillips.

I measured my 40" Kuro and it is 36" wide by 20.5"
My 2 46" TV screens are 40" x 22.5"

I think you should definitely choose between a fully backlit LED or get another plasma. If your stand can handle a 46" then I'm sure it can also handle a 50" right? Have you looked at the 1080p 50" S1 Viera series? You can get a 50" shipped for $1,098 from 6ave.

To OP, I would suggest getting a nice 50" plasma, they can be found for around $1500/ Either that, or go with a bigger Samsung LCD. The prices are great and the performance is awesome, but not quite as good as some of the plasmas out there

I wouldn't think about an LCD panel (LED backlit or not) .Unless the electrial usage is paramount, a plasma screen will still give you better blacks and off angle viewing and a generally more lifelike picture. Plus the prices for a 50" 1080p screen are very resonable at the present......... Happy Hunting

Here is my 2 cents upgrade to a bigger and better plasma if budget allows you to,because as of right now every lcd or lcd with an led backlight is compared to plasma because it set the standard. The only reason to use an lcd is if the room that your using to watch tv in gets large amounts of bright light.

Hell, you can get a Panasonic 50" 1080p S1 from Sam's for $998.00 Thats a really nice price. The 46" was $750-800 or somthing. The 42" was only $598 for craps sake!!

I personally have never seen a better picture on any TV (tube, rear projection, LCD, or plasma) than what I saw this weekend on a 55" Samsung 8000 series LED LCD. It was mind blowing. Watched it all weekend and had a hard time comprehending what was making the difference. Was it the 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, the 240hz, the LEDs? I don't know, but it easily outshined my LED DLP Samsung that I got about two years back and a brand new 50" Samsung plasma that was bought at the same time. The UN Samsungs are pretty expensive right now, but they will come down, just like everything else. And when they do, I will getting one. Just wish they made a 60"+ one so I could do an even swap, but frankly, the picture was so amazing on the 55", I have considered downsizing, and that says a lot.

I can't believe you actually put any real stock in those inflated contrast ratios!

Hold out for an LED tv? In my opinion no. But thats just me because LED dont impress me that much. I think going for a Plasma or a good LCD would be the way to go for now at least but the bottom line is its your money. But would I wait? Nope!

Inflated or not, this TV stands out above and beyond every other HD set I have ever laid eyes on. So there is something going on here. My father and I have LED DLP rear projections that it easily put to shame. It is the best looking LCD on the market. And my uncle even bought a 50" Samsung plasma at the same time (for a different room) and the LED LCD looks a million times better than that too. So like I said, I don't know why these Samsung UN series LED LCDs look so amazing, but they really are the best thing going right now.
