Default recommendations for powerful but affordable receiver for old speakers?

I have a pair of old Sony ss-c57 speakers I want to put to good use in a new home theatre. Any recommendations for speakers to compliment the old Sony's and a receiver that can handle them? The SS-C57's are tall speakers, 250 watt peak at 8ohm. I usually do with PA amps and speakers and am not sure I can trust the "130 watts per channel" rating on todays home theatre systems when I see them powering tiny hissing satellite speakers that could run on AA's and sub's that only generate physical vibrations but no real noise... (sarcastic exaggeration of course) in home theatre systems seem to have forgotten there used to be a mid range between the highs and the lows.

I'm not too picky about brands and have no preference between Sony, Technics, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer... or others.

What do you consider "affordable"?

Can you try to explain your post a little better, because I am completely confused as to what it is you trying to say and what your need is. I did a search on your Sony SS-C57 speakers, but came up empty.

Yeah, I came up blank on searching for the sony ss-c57 speakers myself. They predate the internet and therefore I'm unable to go download a manual from Sony's site to see their exact specifications.

I'm trying to figure out what a good amp/receiver is to power these speakers but my trouble is that I don't know the power rating for the speakers. I know they have a 250 watt peak (8ohm) but I don't know what they're expected to run at normally.

The biggest home theater amps I can find that aren't "stupid expensive" only do 130 watts per channel. Is that going to be enough for a big old pair of Sony tower speakers?

Of course I only have two of these speakers... and need a few more hefty speakers to fill out a home theater system. I'm not happy with the sound I hear from most of the home theater systems out there with the little satellite speakers and the single sub box. I find these put out headache inducing hissing high's, floor shaking but almost inaudible lows, and absolutely no mid range. I'm looking for some good full range speakers to add to the current setup, and an amp to power it all.

Affordable is hard to put a number on since I'd spend a little extra for quality some days but say amp + a few more speakers for under $600.
