Default recommendations for receiver/speakers

Any recommendations for a good entry level receiver and speakers for my Blu-Ray player. Take into consideration the following. This is not a huge room. Its a small room in fact. I may not even get the receiver. I am just trying to get a feel for my would be options. Thanks.

I recommend setting a budget to start unless of course $ is no object. Good luck with your responses.

not to rain on your parade, but i think speakers without a receiver would be pointless/useless. you should at least get a receiver as the foundation for your sound.

my suggestion is to go search in the forums and look at the 100 threads for suggestions and maybe you wont need any more suggestions and become so knowledgable to give suggestion your self but the onkyo 605 with speakers you like the sound of polk and kipsch are nice for not so much money but if u want to spend alot martin logans, B&W it all depends on what you like the sound of its all personal preferance

Hi, really need more information here, but here goes nothing.

lower price
Receiver: Sony STR-DG920 (does HDMI and 1080/24p, with DTS-ES etc)
speaker package: Harmon Kardon HKTS-18 roughly all up it would be just over $1000 (be sure to do the 7.1 add-on)

next level up
Receiver: Sony STR-DG920
speaker package: Infinity TSS-1200 (plus 7.1 add-on)
just over $1500?

Receiver: Sony STR-DA5300ES
speaker package: Infinity TSS-4000 (plus 7.1 add-on)
$3000?

A Sony BDP-S350 or Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu Ray player would work well with any of these setups.
you want an AV Receiver that can do as well with the video signals as it does audio. So you dont just want HDMI, you want it to handle 24p Blu Ray signals, and I know the Sony's do that.

I have been only using this forum for a day and the replies are fast. I like a little sarcasm myself. Of course I would get both a receiver and speaker. Maybe just from different manufacturers. Thanks T-Town for the jab at me. Maybe my day will come when I can return the sarcasm. In a good fashion, of course. As far as my name sake who has helped me out earlier today. There is only so much time in a day to read 100's of posts! But thanks for the recommendation you did mention. To the others who put links up, thanks.

By the way I am not spending a thousand. I was looking for as mentioned a good entry level unit. Between $300 - $500.

Yes and they sound fantastic! The base is very crisp and deep. the highs are outstanding. Honestly sounded better then the Bose I listened to. (IMO) obviously. I have not found 1 bad review on these anywhere.

Default What receiver/speakers to buy

Hey There,

I recently completed a home theater and have some suggestions. Keep in mind that everything revolves around your budget. How you allocate your budget is critical. Spending money in some areas, keeping other areas lower in spending can yield some very good results, and cheaper than you may imagine. Also, everyones ear is different, so you have to listen.

For my rear and side surround speakers I purchased Mirage omnisat. You can find these speakers on ebay for a lot cheaper than retail, even online retail. Mirage also has good front and center speakers that are less expensive and yield great soundstaging.

My receiver, which I suppose it already old, was the yamaha RXV 2700. Technology has moved on, but I've found yamaha surround receivers to be of excellent quality.

As I mention, don't be afraid to shop online for these types of components. Paying retail, as in walk in retail, will just eat whatever budget you have up for no good reason. Likewise, shopping at amazon can have similar results. Comparison is critical. Buy.com worked out pretty good for me. As did ebay. Research, read reviews, and then compare. My feeling is always to spend more on center and fronts, let the sides and rear be cheaper. Look at the features your receiver has. Once you buy, your stuck for a while, so research and compare, and read reviews....did I say that already.

Good luck.

Check out Polk RM6750's 5.1 system. Small and stylish with good sound. $250 plus $35 shipping on Amazon. I got a Yamaha receiver for a couple hundred as well. I am very happy with it. Of course there is better out there but I was being fiscally responsible to myself and trying to stay out of the doghouse with my wife. It adds up real fast when you add speaker wire, sub cable, brackets, etc.

Agree 100%. Since your on a budget, stay away from retail. You'll get a lot more for your money.
