Default What receiver/speakers to buy

Hey There,

I recently completed a home theater and have some suggestions. Keep in mind that everything revolves around your budget. How you allocate your budget is critical. Spending money in some areas, keeping other areas lower in spending can yield some very good results, and cheaper than you may imagine. Also, everyones ear is different, so you have to listen.

For my rear and side surround speakers I purchased Mirage omnisat. You can find these speakers on ebay for a lot cheaper than retail, even online retail. Mirage also has good front and center speakers that are less expensive and yield great soundstaging.

My receiver, which I suppose it already old, was the yamaha RXV 2700. Technology has moved on, but I've found yamaha surround receivers to be of excellent quality.

As I mention, don't be afraid to shop online for these types of components. Paying retail, as in walk in retail, will just eat whatever budget you have up for no good reason. Likewise, shopping at amazon can have similar results. Comparison is critical. Buy.com worked out pretty good for me. As did ebay. Research, read reviews, and then compare. My feeling is always to spend more on center and fronts, let the sides and rear be cheaper. Look at the features your receiver has. Once you buy, your stuck for a while, so research and compare, and read reviews....did I say that already.

Good luck.
