I have the two disc dvd edition released in 2007, which has the exact supplements as the blu ray. Is the upgrade in audio/picture quality worth it?

Yes, definitely. Especially because it can be had on Blu-ray for less than $10.00. Originally shot on 70mm film, 2001: A Space Odyssey provides astounding visuals. So remarkable considering the film is over 40 years old.
