it's up to u to decide if it's good or bad money wise.
quality wise, for the most part it's good to upgrade from dvd to blu. i've repurchased the following on blu that i had already owned on dvd: 300 Batman Begins Braveheart Cars Daredevil The Da Vinci Code Fantastic 4 Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer The Fast & the Furious 2 Fast 2 Furious Ghost Rider Gladiator Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Hitman Matrix Matrix Reloaded Matrix Revolutions Mr. & Mrs. Smith The Mummy The Mummy Returns National Treasure National Treasure: Book of Secrets Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End The Punisher Shawshank Redemption Spider Man Spider Man 2 Spider Man 3 Superman Returns Swordfish Transformers Troy Underworld Underworld: Evolution Van Helsing X-Men X2: X-Men United X3: The Last Stand |

At some point I will replace most of my DVD's. But as for DD on titles already owned within the same format, never done it and never will. I do not count extended editions as the same films. The only difference is normally the extras and I rarely watch them.

I agree. But what of the "conspiracies" that the studios deliberately hold out on certain features or higher quality for the sake of a douple dip down the road? (see Quantum of Solace - relatively light on supplements, and Gladiator - attrocious PQ by most accounts)

I double dip on a lot of movies, eventually I would like my entire collection to be bluray
most double dips are worth it, for example in December I will be double dipping on snatch, But snatch is so good that I don't mind double dipping |

I double dipped for movies that I love and sold the dvd version of the movie.
I don't see it as bad since we are actually upgrading to another format. However if sudios release a version of the movie that is stripped down and then down a couple months later release another version that is beefed up to make the consumer buy again, then that is bad and a greedy part on them. Kinda like Lord of the Rings. |

I don't strictly consider upgrading a DVD to blu-ray as a double dip. The quality differential is significant and I don't think that the studios are taking advantage of us on the upgrade.
I don't relish the idea of double dipping a blu-ray to a blu-ray though, so I'm very hesitant to pick up titles that double-dipped on DVD. Star Trek, James Bond. I'm also hesitant when I see indicators they aren't doing it right the first time. I just bought a boxed set of Harry Potter blu-rays a couple years ago, and now they are doing the "Ultimate Editions". I guess that's ok, but Harry Potter 6 is coming out in a standard edition when an Ultimate Edition is already indicated... I'm not playing that game. |

I traded most of my duplicated titles in standard DVD for blu-ray version except few special edition hard to get versions ... In the last 7 days I've trading 72 used DVD for 36 new Blu-ray disc (20 of them are dulicated titles) at Suncoast, 2 used = 1 new BD + $5 ... I have to do this because I don't think I will watch those movies in standard DVD again ...

I spend oodles of money on DVD's when they were "the in thing" and I'm NOT gonna upgrade every DVD title I have, have well over 2,000 DVD's and that will cost a mint to do! But some of my faves I have stepped up and double dipped on. Just my two pennies!

I have not watched a lot of DVDs in the past few months. I have a lot of Queen DVDs and Godzilla DVDs that I know will probably never be on Blu here in the states, so I'll always have those. I have replaced quite a few DVDs and Laserdiscs that I've owned throughout the years already.
I would have replaced Gojira this morning, but the transfer is horrible and the DVD still looks better and that is sad. |

I tend to double- (or triple-) dip based on the extras and *significant* improvement in picture quality.
I'm one of those who really likes the supplements. I love to get deep into the workings of how some movies were made, with commentaries and behind-the-scenes footage. "Terminator 2" is one movie I actually have in three formats: the boxed, collectors-edition laserdisc (which was $125 when released, and has lots of material that has yet to come out on any other format), the DVD, and, now, the BD. Basically, I just really love the film. I also love two out of the four "Alien" movies, and have "Alien" and "Aliens" in boxed, collectors-edition laserdisc editions as well as the boxed DVD "Alien Quadrilogy" (or whatever weird word they invented for it). For some reason, I don't see myself shelling out for the BD versions of these. That said, I don't see myself replacing many of the DVDs I have with BDs, unless they just aren't good DVD copies (like, for instance, "Body Heat" or "An American President") or the DVD was only released in a full-screen version. I'm much more inclined, obviously, to replace VHS tapes with DVD/BD versions (although a number of those VHS films haven't been -- and probably never will be -- released on either DVD or BD). As long as the various machines continue to work, I'm happy to spread my collection across VHS, laser, DVD, and BD. |
