I was within a week of putting down the cash for a 54V10 or 58V10 when this Panny darkening situation cropped up. Like many I suspect, I've decided to hold off a bit and see what happens.
When I mentioned this to my local electronics shop, they suggested I take a look at the LG 50PS60. It's 50" 1080p with THX certification. Not having much experience with LG TVs, I'm rather skeptical. They are selling the TV for $1349. They have a floor model they've recently completed an ISF calibration on and feel it's good, though I'm not the kind to purchase floor units. So what do the experts out there think about this unit? Thanks! ![]() Last edited by BluDroid; 02-13-2010 at 02:50 PM. |

Hello
I might regret this; but, consider the LG; albeit carefully. In the LG's favor, is that it is calibrated; assuming that they did a good job. Additionally, based on what I currently know about the calibration capabilities of both; the LG is a better design with regards to having the proper adjustments available for a proper professional calibration, which is a very important consideration. In the Panasonic's favor is that they have been remarkable displays for many years, always on the heels of Pioneer the past few years, and possibly the best display for many more before Pioneer became involved in plasma displays. Calibration, between the two, is a primary issue as I perceive it, as the Panasonic has unfortunate limitations that are well documented in reviews that include calibration, interfering with a proper professional calibration, as the LG does not, which means that you can get it right to video specifications, which is always of significant importance. Remember too, that the new Panasonic and LG models for 2010 are coming. I have personally always favored the Panasonic Plasma Displays, but the calibration issue, which also seriously plagues the Pioneer Elite Plasma Displays even more; makes a strong case for any display that can be entirely and properly professionally calibrated to video standards; so, do consider the LG for this reason alone; especially, as it is already calibrated, making it a remarkable opportunity, given your information. Hello jibucha.
Thanks for the information. I'll certainly keep this in mind. Should I elect to go this route, I'd end up buying a new unit and having them calibrate it down the road. I'm not much of a fan for buying floor units. I'm not sure about the pricing either at this point. I haven't done much research on LG yet. But I'm getting there... Thanks again! ![]() |

I can tell you for sure that the V10 is a superior TV overall, but the LG is a great set for the money. LG TV's have very good color accuracy, but like pretty much every set with a THX mode you can actually get better results in one of the custom modes. THX is a convenience though for those who don't want the hassle. Where the LG falls a bit behind is in the black level. Its about as good as last year's Panny's in this regard so its not bad by any means, but not as good as today's Panny's and just a tad behind the current Samsung sets.
The best deal on the LG is actually the 60" version since it goes on sale quite often for $1500-1600 shipped on Newegg and a few other sites. You should look at that for the best bang for your money. Another thing I should point out is that the default orbiter setting is crap and it should be the first thing you change when you turn on the set to prevent retention. |
