Arrow WB trying to acquire the rights for Space Invaders.

Hey,

So Warner Brothers are trying to acquire the rights for this game. They already have producers lined up as well for the movie.

Here is more:

It had to happen one day. I mean, we've already got Asteroids and Monopoly adaptations in the works (not to mention tons of other modern video games), and someone sooner or later is going to adapt Pong, too. The LA Times is reporting that Warner Bros. is negotiating to acquire feature film rights to Space Invaders from Taito, the Japanese company that originally made the game. If they get the rights, Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady will join as producers, which may or may not be a good thing considering Gordon has produced films like Saving Private Ryan, The Day After Tomorrow, The Messenger, and 12 Rounds.

I hope I don't have to explain what Space Invaders is to anyone. It's one of the most iconic video games ever made, first released in 1978 by Taito, that simply involves navigating a ship along the bottom of the screen firing lasers up towards invading spaceships. It was released both in arcade form and eventually on the Atari 2600. The LA Times forgot to name a screenwriter, but they do say that "we hear Marlowe's take is a solid one," so at least it sounds like there is a writer attached. They're probably just going to use a standard space story slapped with the Space Invaders title anyway, so don't expect anything brilliant.
Does every movie has to be adapted from a game? Let's get serious about this. I mean you and I may have enjoyed the game but it doesn't mean that it has to become a movie.

What happened to originality?

Enjoy.

I remember playing this game 20 years ago. It has no plot. There is no story to convert to a screenplay. Aliens attack and the earthlings try to shoot down their spaceships.

Apparently, WB is trying to acquire the name. I guess they believe that people will pay to see a movie with the "Space Invaders" name, but won't pay if it's called something else.

Agree, there is no plot whatsoever...would be cool though to see Leisure Suit Larry as a Hollywood Production - I loved that game!

I'm waiting for the big screen adaptation of "Frogger". I think they could go really dark and edgy with that.

Family Guy already did this.

Also what happened to the Pac-Man movie? They have already ruined my memories of multiple movies, series and cartoons from my chilhood. Why not take the video games also? I'm going out to my garage and fire my SI arcade machine up in protest.

Originality doesn't pay the bills. Acquiring stuff and feeding off of it, however, does.
