Default Projector experts, help

I saw a small Casio projector today and it was so small I could put it up on the wall in front of a large pull down screen and it would not be that noticeable.

I don't need a projector because I am happy with the set up I now have except it would be fun to roll down a large screen and put on a large show once in awhile.

My question for projector experts is:

Here is the projector that I saw
http://www.projectorcentral.com/Casio-XJ-S43W.htm

Is this a decent projector for an occasional viewing???

Priced at $1,000, that Casio is certainly affordable, but I haven’t viewed it with my own eyes – so I can’t speak with any real authority on the PQ it throws. At 2500 ANSI lumens, it’s a bright projector – meaning you could drive a very large screen. 1800:1 contrast isn’t great, which means you shouldn’t expect colors to be reproduced especially well. The native resolution is WXGA, which means anytime you watch a 1080p bluray the projector would have to scale the picture somewhat to 1920x1080 (which isn’t usually a good thing for PQ). Also, it doesn’t support 1080/24p – which is a digital projector’s way of approximating the film look of 24 frames per second. Since I’m a film buff, that would be a deal killer.

In short, the Casio seems more like the kind of projector you’d use in an office setting – doing power-point demos, etc.

YMMV.

It seems like you want a projector set-up, but only kind of. My experience is that a projector set-up is far superior for movie watching and gaming (compared to a standard panel television) – so my suggestion is, if you’re going to do it, do it right.

Excellent input and very wise advise.

I thank you

No, that contrast ratio is horrible (though numbers are often decieving it does generally give you some idea).

Is second, if your going to do it, do it right.

The native resolution 1280x800 is an odd number. You can get a new entry level 1080p pj for around $1000, i'd probably consider getting one of these instead.

That is a multimedia projector designed for high brightness but not high contrast. It would be more suited for an office with some lights on displaying a computer screen--not high definition video.

If you are thinking about getting into a projector setup take a look at:

http://www.projectorreviews.com/

Read though the information provided and then try looking at projectors like the Optoma HD20--$999.99 or the Vivitek H1080FD--$999.99.

Get an Optoma hd 20 from Costco....and you have 90 days to return it and 1080p.
