So does this blu-ray definitely, definitely have English subtitles? As usual, French sites are vague about the info for this blu-ray - English dub or English subtitles or both?

Default Les Demoiselles de Rochefort blu ray

I am new to the site and thought I would put my 2 cents in on THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT. I just received my blu ray and am happy to report it is INCREDIBLY wonderful. The picture quality is beautiful to behold (dare I say perfect?) -- and the newly generated main titles (in ORANGE) make you feel like you're experiencing the film for the first time, they're so fresh. The sound is an immense improvement over any previous version -- it is very crisp, clear and highly detailed. It almost sounded directionally stereophonic. The extras are all in HD, even the familiar 3-minute trailer, fresh & colorful, nicely cleaned up and anamorphic for the first time. It's nice to have Agnes Varda's "Young Girls - 25 Years Later," especially as it's English subtitled and now accessible without having to change discs. The most valuable extra, in my opinion and in addition to the fact that EVERYTHING on this disc is considerately subtitled in English (!), is that the movie has now been subtitled in FRENCH as well -- including the lyrics. Until now, I have tried to learn the lyrics phonetically, but here they are right in front of you on screen in PURPLE!!! I must point out some negative attributes. May I ask, whatever happened to the 6-track stereo tracks? Doesn't this music deserve the best restoration work? If it originated as a 6-track 70mm roadshow picture, why is it that the soundtrack has not been represented here as such, or on any previous home version for that matter? Dreck routinely get 7.1 upgrades -- at the very least, couldn't they Chace it or do something to approximate the original experience? And, if I have one gripe that could easily have been addressed -- and it's major I'm afraid -- WERE THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF THIS MASSIVE AND EXPENSIVE 2K RESTORATION NOT AWARE THAT 2 MINUTES OF WALK OUT MUSIC HAS BEEN LEFT OFF? There is an artificial fade-out at the end of the blue-screened end credits...it should go on for another 2 minutes of black screen to a CRESCENDO (listen to the finale on the 2-CD soundtrack). The total running time for the feature should be 126 minutes, not 124. Admittedly MOST of the home video presentations throughout the world perpetuate this, but it's inexcusable. One very nice, highly recommended COMPLETE version is a 2-DVD set from France with a pink, glossy cardboard album with a matching slipcase. It actually has a very nice picture, especially upconverted. Just goes to show, you should never get rid of a previous edition without knowing what you're getting to replace it. Caveats aside, this blu ray does blow away all DVD presentations and is a must have for all who love this movie...but here's hoping a future (U.S.) disc producer reads and heeds this review.

Michael, this isn't Agnes Varda's Demoiselles. It's Jacques Demy's Demoiselles.

Agnes was responsible for the posthumous, deeply horrible previous restoration in completely wrong pushed acid/pastel color palette released in the early 2000s, which was also the source for the hideous Miramax R1 DVD.

You shouldn't be gviing Agnes any credit at all for this new Cine Tamis/Lab Eclair reissue/resto which is far more faithful to the original prints than Agnes ' "version:

Default Disc is OOP

This disc went out of print a few weeks back and supplies seem to have already dried up most places.

Amazon.fr - sold out
Fnac - sold out

I bought a copy at Chapitre.com for 24.99€ plus 15€ shipping. They seem to have more copies remaining in stock.

http://www.chapitre.com/CHAPITRE/fr/...,34443917.aspx

Their website is a bit confusing, but I'm lucky enough to have a French consulate in the building where I work, so I went in and, with my best sad face, asked for help navigating the website

You can also order directly from Arte, but their website doesn't say if they still actually have the disc in stock:

I'm shocked at the rate at which Blu-rays are going out of print in Europe. In the last few weeks I've ordered Polanski's PIRATES and the UK disc of DR. STRANGELOVE, both just as they vanished. And there seem to be numerous others.

I'm convinced there will be no physical video formats after BR so I'm determined to buy my favorite films while they're available. However it's tough to buy all the BRs that I'd like from Europe as they're so expensive, especially once shipping is added on.

Wow! It looks like my posting the Chapitre.com listing here resulted in them selling out of the BR within 12 hours!

For anyone who may still be interested in acquiring this film,
I ordered and received it recently from this vendor.

Was about €37 incl. postage to my country (Israel),
and was asked to pay the courier an extra €7 or so upon arrival.

THANK YOU! I just placed the order and it went through, payment and all, so I'm assuming it is still in-stock there. I didn't know about this store... what a great find.

Also, for anyone in the US trying to order this from deepdiscount.com, they say it's currently unavailable and they're waiting for new copies to arrive -- but that's just their way of saying it's out of print & they don't realize it yet.

Does anyone know if this is getting a Region-A release from any of the studios, or possibly a re-issue in France?

Kirby
