Question internal Laptop Blu-ray disk drive?

When will there be an aftermarket blue-ray disk drive for laptop computers? the only regret I have about my laptop now (being so close to release of BD release) is that I will not have a bd player. I would like to eventualy upgrade if possible.

I Have a Dell Inpiron E1705 with Intel Core Duo 2.0 GHz

Default Blue-Ray Internal Laptop Drive

As many of you know Apple has helped to develop Blue-Ray and will be using the technology in future products.

I want to buy a Macbook Pro but I am now considering waiting for an inbuilt Blue-Ray drive.

I want my Laptop to last. I don't what to find in several years that I can't install the latest software because it only comes on blue-ray disks.

Will it be worth the wait?

Apple does not have a history of putting the latest/fastest/highest density drives into their laptops.

Whether this is because Steve Jobs got burned on optical drives at NeXT (he dropped the floppy back in the 80s and only had a read/write optical drive in it and the technical pundits burned him in the press for it while the users demanded an add on floppy capability) or whether Apple needs an ultra thin slot loading drive to fit into their thin laptops, I don't know.

That said, it is quite possible Apple will do a rev change on their professional line of Intel based laptops when Merom (Intel's 64 bit laptop dual core processor using the next generation microarchitecture) is in full production (probably early fourth quarter). If Apple does that it will most likely be too soon for a Blu-ray drive to be included.

However, if Apple does not announce a revision on this line until January (Macworld Expo where a LOT of Apple stuff is announced each year) then a Blu-ray drive *might* be included.

Bottom line:
Possible MacBook Pro rev in September/October but Blu-ray unlikely
Probable MacBook Pro rev in January with Blu-ray quite possible

Thanks

I'm hoping for a Macworld Expo 2007.This I know may not be possible.

I'm sure they must have the technology already, it must be the ability to produce these sort of drives remotely cost effectively that is holding Blue-ray’s potential back.

Also does anyone have any idea what sort of speeds Blue-ray drives will be able to write at.

lol apple had nothing to do with blu-ray. It was SONY, and the PS3 that has dumped the most money into getting it out. Panasonic has dumped quite a bit of time and money into it as well. As far as I know, Crapple has had nothing to do with it. They might have played with it, but as far as I know, boat anchors dont need or use disc drives =x : jab jab :

As per the questioned asked, I really would like to know as well about laptop bd drives. Its really the only thing I havent heard about.

I think this still remains to be seen, as we all know Apple is a very secretive company when it pertains to releasing details in terms of its future hardware--Blu-ray drives--and its superior OS--Mac OS X.

Also, with the rumors swirling around with possible iTunes movies coming on the Blu-ray discs themselves, Apple well may suprise everyone in regards to their Blu-ray offerings. Moreover, with Apple being on the the BDA's Board of Directors, I would think they are definitely putting their two cents ($) in, literally.

The MacBook Pro 17-inch with a Blu-ray drive would be freakin sweet. Coupled with Final Cut Pro support and other video software support (iMovieHD, iDVD (iBlu-ray?), etc. , Apple....I'm your huckleberry.

Apple had nothing to do with the creation of Blu Ray. Those words should not be utterered again unless in jest.

Apple has HD-DVD authoring tools. I doubt they move from their current neutral stance. Sure Steve Jobs gladhanded the Sony exec on stage at Macworld but then again Steve's a marketer and will say just about anything to ride the hype wave.

You asked in another thread where you had been misleading. I would suggest this is one place. You state "Apple has HD-DVD authoring tools." I have never seen nor heard of such tools. Also you imply Apple does not have Blu-ray authoring tools which it has explicitly stated it will support in both hardware and software (including APIs).

It's not just Jobs "glandhanding" a Sony exec on stage (in fact neither HD-DVD nor Blu-ray came up when they were on stage together at Macworld). Apple has issued stand alone press releases about supporting Blu-ray Disk. I have never seen any stand alone press releases from Apple claiming specific support for HD-DVD.

I think this is your answer as to whom has been misleading who.

I'm sure you will be able to get a drive (even colour matched) as Dell is in the middle of Blu Ray as well just look at the offical Blu Ray webs site (unlike HP they hav made no announcements about sitting on the fence). I intend to buy a new Dell laptop before the end of June and expect to be able to get a BD drive at a latter date.

Just a few things to ponder. Microsoft did its damndest to kill Blue Ray (and HD DVD) either outright or by delaying it until it became irrelevant; it may have worked too. Microsoft only supported HD DVD to knock the wind out of the sales of Blue Ray. Their model was always to have the user download a media file that could only be accessed for a certain length of time. This would include streaming technologies.

Holy Thread Resurection Batman!

Yet, the first Blu-ray enabled laptop runs XP MCE 2005 - I have one!
June 2006 model as a matter of fact.

Google VGN-AR190G - May 2006 debut in Japan, June 2006 first sold in U.S.

While Microsoft may have supported HD DVD, the only OS capable of playback and burning of Blu-ray was Windows(a Microsoft item).
Say what you will... my 3 year old VAIO still plays(and burns) BDs great!
