Default What if Warner Bros. went HD DVD exclusive?

Sony + Disney/Buena Vista + Fox versus Universal + Paramount + Warner Bros.

Would this not be the bloodiest battle mankind has ever known?

Would the evil HD-DVD trinity be able to overcome the PS3 installed base?

Do you think it is more likely that HD-DVD would succeed or that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray would both fail?

Customers would get confused and pi**ed, until dual-format players came out.

Isn't Time Warner trying to push it's own format as well?

I understand that Warner gets royalties from HD-DVD.

I think there is cause for concern because it has been suggest that M$ is already in talks with Warner.

Anyway, if this happens I am out and will be looking for a new hobby. Actually my plan will be to rely on Netflix to provide my DVD needs (cause I aint buying this dinosaur media either).

I may still buy Superbad in Blu-ray though.

Warner is NOT going to go HD DVD exclusive. They seem to be the ones touting neutrality. They're still coming out with the Total HD disc at some point too, right?

Honestly, if Warner went HD-DVD, I think that combo with Universal and Paramount would beat BD's Sony, Disney, and Fox. Sorry to say, but that's just the way I see it. I pray pray pray that Warner wises up and just goes Blu and ends this war quickly.

seriously though....i think people are going to turn to WB now to end this.....if they go BD its over...if they go HD DVD it will be a long, expensive and painful toss up.

WB can end this, if they choose BD...if they choose HD DVD i think the nod goes to HD DVD all things considered in the long run unless Fox, Disney and Sony go nuts on the catelogs.

I doubt them going exclusive to either side would end it.

I think going BD would end it right now...but if they went HD DVD i think it would drag it out......I mean, wed be talking all future warner bros.....Harry Potter, LOTR etc. if they announced BD exclusive...paramount and Uni cant come close to that.

If they go HD DVD I think sony, Fox and Disney have enough, if they throw EVERYTHING they have at it.

With how warner has been favoring HD DVD, it really wouldnt shock me as much as parmount if they released something soon before october and BDJ rolls around.

I think Microsoft would have to offer Warner a very large sum of money to pull Warner to the dark side. A much larger sum than what they paid Paramount considering the quantity of catalog titles and the rate at which Warner is pushing them to hi-def. Microsoft would have to pay, I would say, double what Paramount got, if not more. I really don't think Warner would be willing to go HD-DVD exclusive for any other reason and I really don't believe Microsoft is willing to offer much more than what they gave Paramount. $150 million from our perspective seems like a turd in the bucket for Microsoft, but they have been burning a lot of money this year already on their Xbox 360 "Repair" program. That cost them a cool $1 Billion. I don't think they are going to toss around any more money this year. Maybe next year...

That is my biggest fear about this whole thing. Everything seems really fragile right now, and rumours abound that M$ are talking to Warner about buying them out. I hope that isn't true. If it is, then I think it's game over for BD.

I HOPE that the BDA beats them to it, and makes a MASSIVE CASH OFFER to buy out Warner, or at least buy some exclusivity for a year. That would end the war in blu-ray's favour.

Default That would be bad

If WB sides with HD-DVD I would sell my Blu-ray player on eBay super fast and go back to a regular up-conversion DVD player, or maybe buy something like the LG duel format player. Sometimes I think I should have just bought a PS3 and not a Blu-ray player, that way I could at least play games on it just in case Blu-ray looses.
Lets all be positive though, Blu-ray is clearly the better format, Paramount acted out of greed and since WB isn't fully supporting HD-DVD right now we can continue to buy more Blu-rays than ever before just to show Paramount how wrong they are.

I think the PS3 will continue to be a potent weapon for Blu-Ray. No matter how many studios go to HD-DVD, PS3 gamers are getting a Blu-Ray player whether they like it or not. It´s a major reason why Blu-Ray sales are as high as they are.

And the PS3 is still young. Right now it´s Blu-ray capabilities are one of it´s strong selling ponts, but soon it wiill start being more appealing to people who are holding out only for good games. Starting next month the PS3´s powerhouse exclusive titles will be released and there´s supposed to be a second price drop by the end of the year. This means more people will be buying the system purely for games and automatically be put into the Blu-Ray camp when it comes time to buy their movies.

So Blu-ray will continue to outsell HD-DVD because the choice will already be made for the consumer more and more as the PS3 picks up speed as a gaming machine.

No matter how anybody looks at it, HD-DVD is facing an uphill battle because, let´s face it, they can sell as many $199 HD-DVD players as they want, but it´s the disc sales that count and they´ll have to not only overcome Blu-ray player sales but PS3 gaming machine sales too.

Question

Does anyone know how long BETA was on the market before VHS won the war? Does anyone know what the deciding factor was?
