This is an interesting article to read
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Joshua_Zyber/Commentary:_A_War_of_Hype,_and_Paramounts_Big_Bomb shell_/921 quote “I think it's time we all took a step back and tried to look at this from a more balanced perspective. If the video game market can survive with multiple formats, each offering their own exclusive releases, how is the High Definition market any different? Personally, I foresee both HD DVD and Blu-ray coexisting for a long time, and potentially both thriving. If competition between the two formats continues to result in improved quality, lower prices, and a steady stream of movies in High Definition, that's a good thing in my book.” If both HDTV optical formats coexist then most likely the HDTV optical market will be a niche market like the Laserdisc. If BLU-RAY (or the less quality HD-DVD format) won the format war then we would start to see mainstream consumer adoption of HDTV optical discs. One of the reasons the DVD format was so popular was the entire industry supported the format. Last edited by HDTV1080P; 08-31-2007 at 09:54 PM. Reason: grammar |

Also with the DVD format players when launched were over $1,000 dollars but over time the player prices came down to under $50. If the HD-DVD format was not around the BLU-RAY player prices would naturally fall over a few years until one day BLU-RAY players are priced at $50. The format war brings player prices down in price to fast which can result in companies deciding to not make new models in fear that there is no profit to be made on players priced to cheap.

![]() From a Japan site ![]() The split is now something like 55:45, which they like to describe as big lead, while dismissing the 66:34 (or better) lead for Blu-ray in disc sales. The capacity for self-delusion can never be underestimated. |

Joshua Zyber is a known HDDVD shill all over the internet. He knows HDDVD will not win so the only hope left is a dual format future in his eyes. Too bad that's not a possibillity.

Needless to say it's quite obvious that we the consumer and movie/TV fan are the ones who ultimately lose in a situation like this.

I don't think I lost, I think it's the main reason why I was able to get films for 20-25 dollars so fast instead of 40 for each film. I think it's one of the reasons why I got my HD DVD player for 175 dollars and my PS3 for 500 dollars. I think it's one of the reasons why I got me Second Bravia LCD for my bedroom at a really good price of under 2 grand while being 1080p.

I support Blu Ray, I own pleanty of them, and I also feel that the pictue quality ,ability to burn, and title selection is way superior then HD DVD. Don't question me on my support for Blu Ray, but do I think that a little competition is harmful and produces the consumer as losers? NO. This is the United States, Jesus, It's called a Free/Open Marketplace and maybe free speech where we are suppose to have competition in our marketplaces. That's what they teach you in Economics 101. I'm just saying that a little competition is healthy in the marketplace and benificial to the consumer, do you want to say otherwise?

You know not everyone views holding a baby as a bad thing and I ptty those who do, I think that's a pretty bad analogy to end with. And kind of even cruel. I mean you're suggesting a negative connotation with holding a child, call me whatever you want, but seeing as how I'm expecting my first child in the next incoming months I felt that to be a slight sting to my eyes at first, and kind of alarming. I for one love children. Last edited by phil; 09-01-2007 at 08:39 AM. |

In Western English speaking countries "Holding the Baby" is an accepted idiom (There is even a comic named the same). I would suggest doing a little research if you are unsure. Server space costs money - don't waste it.
Footnote - You didn't get Banned for being an Idiot - you got banned as the last identy you assumed got banned for being a TROLL. Last edited by Blue; 09-01-2007 at 03:12 PM. Reason: Footnote |

Eventually - yes the consumer is the loser. The question is when should have everyone agreed?. Caved in at the start and had 8.4GB of highly compressed 720p? Or if there was no war could we have had 100GB Blu-ray disc's? One thing is certain the war has driven the price down faster than anyone could have imagined. This boils down to Toshiba determined to hang onto their DVD royalties and the rest of the industry determined not to pay them (I'm referring to the negotiations before Microsoft got in the middle of things). Look at the price of hardware HD-FUD players to sell (according to rumours) for under US$200 by Christmas! When you think about it except for the control software and the supporting electronics as well as a small lens - the HD-FUD and Blu players are identical. As we are talking the industry giant's I don't think anyone would be getting bigger discounts on volume, so price has crashed to the point I think one or more companies maybe actually subsidising the cost. The problem for the consumer that choose the wrong format is going to be left holding the baby?
