Will definitely be picking this one up day 1. Nothing makes a format viable like a large selection of John Wayne films.

It is nice to finally get a WAYNE release from Paramount. Wish they could at least release another title of his the same day.

(I realize this one is being released for the Coen Brothers version due in theaters)

best news in some time!
I've been wondering for 4 years if and when Paramount would grace us with some of the John Wayne catalogs that they hold the rights to, and though I'm happy with the news, I can't help but feel a little sad that it is only being released because the Coen brothers decided to do a remake.
I want to believe that many of Paramount's JW films like "El Dorado", "Hatari!",
"The High and The Mighty", "Big Jake", "Rio Lobo", "Hondo" etc. etc. will eventually be released on blu-ray, but I still don't feel a lot of confidence that they will.
anyway, hope Paramount at least gives us JW fans a worthy blu-ray after such an epic wait.

My wife blew me away the other day when I was talking about seeing the trailer for the new one. She said she'd never seen the original?!?!? I remember being a child and watching this in a walk in theater. This was back when it was a big thing to go to a walkie Anyway, guess I'll add this to my que on Netflix and see how it looks. Like Clint Eastwood, Wayne usually makes it to my dvd collection. So I'm sure he'll make it to my blu-ray collection too

I'm going to hold off on purchasing it now. Maybe Paramount will be smart and bundle it with the remake when it comes to home-video (like how Fox did with The Day the Earth Stood Still).

I recently sold my John Wayne Century Collection on DVD. It sure would be nice if Paramount would come out of hibernation and release a Wayne boxset on blu-ray.

It's been DNRed. Looks like a typical Paramount catalog title.

Why do all of their catalog titles have to look like soap operas?

I believe every single Blu-ray release has DNR applied to it. So when you watched the Blu-ray did you think there were only some scene that looked like there was too much DNR or was it the whole thing?

EVERY single time a studio uses an old dvd based master you are going to have DNR on the blu-ray because it has already been applied.
numerous "experts" have discussed this issue.
end of story.
the extent of the dnr is what matters, and in this case, it doesn't appear that there is terrible overdone dnr on this bd which adversely affects every scene or anything like that.
Is it really noticeable in a few specific scenes?
of course most likely it is.
we all know what these types of releases look like, and at the end of the day it is what it is.
of course I want to play the release on my display to get a better sense of how good or bad this bd is, but I'm not overly concerned at the moment.

Well said..

Studios are not going to spend the cash for a new master of every older title even if we all really want them to.

This isn't a high profile release, so I didn't have high expectations, but it's still meh at best. Smeary and digital. Go see Easy Rider for a 1969 film done right.

and 99% Easy Rider had a new master created for the bd release.
that's why it came out so nice.
it's not rocket science.

That being said, they didn't go overboard and it still looks very watchable.
I disagree, the screenshots look fine. The image isn't as sharp as other releases, but that could be due to a number of factors including the now dated scan(reported as being from 2007).

People complaining about this film, shouldn't be disappointed with the transfer, but rather Paramount's decision to not generate a new master.

I'll be picking this up sometime after Christmas, depending upon gift cards.

So when you watched the Blu-ray of True Grit did you notice "smudged, plasticy faces" throughout the whole disc or just in some scenes?

I have Easy Rider and yes it looks great.
